Abstract

This book covers a broad range of important topics and recent developments in this field. First, the general language of quantum field theory is developed in a way appropriate for dealing with systems having a large number of degrees of freedom. This paves the way for a description of the basic processes in such systems, the emphasis being on phase transitions. Applications include various aspects of superfluidity and superconductivity, as well as a detailed description of the fractional quantum Hall liquid. This monograph addresses graduate students and researchers working in related disciplines looking for an approachable but thorough introduction to the field of condensed matter physics.

Abstract  ‫

The magic of mere things / John Banville -- Scientifica : the inventor. How to make a shade disappear with alacrity / Pierre Senges -- Artificialia : the artisan. Abstract

Representing the third generation of Vuittons, Gaston-Louis’s wide interests and voracious curiosity were intimately bound with the future of the family business. A collector since his childhood, Gaston-Louis Vuitton (1883–1970) accumulated hundreds of objects over his lifetime. In addition to forming a collection of trunks – his first motivation and the one he announced publicly – his roving eye lit upon rare antique travel articles, locks and escutcheons, hand tools, perfume bottles, African masks, walking canes, vintage children’s toys, books, hotel labels (usually fixed on customers’ trunks), printed monograms and other typographical rarities. Together they form a rich personal evocation of curiosités industrielles, or quirks of the trade, as Gaston-Louis liked to call them. He described himself as an ‘unrepentant collector’, delighted by the ‘joy of the treasure hunter, the toil of the collector, […] an inexhaustible source of inspiration’. This is a collection that will capture the imagination of anyone inspired by bizarre and eclectic curiosities, or those with an interest in the cultural taste and interests of someone who lived through the height of the Art Deco period – indeed, someone whose life was defined by the rigours and the rewards of world travel. It exhibits the highest design and production values for discerning international voyagers in search of the sources of luxury creativity.

It will capture the imagination of anyone inspired by bizarre and eclectic curiosities, or those with an interest in the Art Deco period.  Betty Woodman : theatre of the domestic

Italy : Mousse Publishing, 2016.

 Abstract

From the outset, American artist Betty Woodman (born 1930) has used ceramics as her medium of expression and artistic research, and it has made her one of the most influential and original voices on the international art scene. Bridging the gap between art and craft, Woodman moves nimbly between the traditions of an age-old medium, taking inspiration from Minoan and Egyptian art, Greek and Etruscan sculpture, Tang Dynasty works, majolica and Sèvres porcelain, Italian Baroque architecture and the paintings of Bonnard, Picasso and Matisse, while also introducing innovations in both style and technique. In particular, her way of combining ceramics and painting shows a painterly sensibility that in recent years has played a key role in the development of her work. This publication focuses on work made over the past ten years, while taking stock of Woodman’s continued relevance to contemporary art and her importance among postwar artists.

Shoes : the meaning of style

London : Reaktion Books, [2017]

 Contents

 Introduction -- Sandals : eccentricity -- Boots : inclusivity -- High heels : instability -- Sneakers : exclusivity -- Conclusion

Abstract

We all make choices every day about which shoes to wear, but why do we choose the shoes we do? Today, buying, wearing and collecting shoes is for many of us a habit that borders on a fetish. Even those of us who consider shoes to be trivial are aware of how the wrong choice of footwear can have dire social consequences. This book explores the history of shoes and how different types of footwear have come to mean different things about the people who wear them. Organized around four main types - boots, sneakers, high heels and sandals - this book explains their origins, the impact of technology on how shoes are produced and worn, their designs and how they have come to have social meaning far beyond their use to protect the foot. Along the way Elizabeth Semmelhack reveals the anecdotes and scandals, successes and failures, dislikes and obsessions of the makers, wearers and observers who helped to create the movements and fashions of footwear. Beautifully illustrated throughout, Shoes is a thoroughly surprising history of an everyday item. It will appeal not only to followers of fashion, but to those interested in social history and identity.

Abstract

"100 Ideas That Changed Fashion chronicles the most influential fashion ideas that changed womenswear in the West from 1900 to the present day. The book will be visually arresting, exciting to read and an inspiring fashion bible. Charting the incidents and ideas that changed the way women dress, it gives a unique perspective on the history of twentieth-century fashion. Rather than just documenting the changes in fashion, it also explains why these changes happened. From the invention of the bias cut and the stiletto heel to designers such as Coco Chanel who changed the way we think about clothes, the book will be entertaining, intelligent and a visual feast"--

Household gods : the British and their possessions

New Haven : Yale University Press, 2009.

 Contents

The British at home -- Material good : morality and the well-to-do -- Cathedrals to commerce : shoppers and entrepreneurs -- Art at home : how the house became artistic -- In possession : men, women, and decoration -- Home as a stage : personality and possessions -- Designs on the past : antiques as a faith -- Modern living : the triumph of safety first -- Your neighbour’s house.

Abstract

At what point did the British develop their mania for interiors, wallpaper, furniture, and decoration? Why have the middle classes developed so passionate an attachment to the contents of their homes? This absorbing book offers surprising answers to these questions, uncovering the roots of today’s consumer society and investigating the forces that shape consumer desires. Richly illustrated, ’Household Gods’ chronicles a hundred years of British interiors, focusing on class, choice, shopping, and possessions. Exploring a wealth of unusual records and archives, Deborah Cohen locates the source of modern consumerism and materialism in early nineteenth-century religious fervor. Over the course of the Victorian era, consumerism shed the taint of sin to become the pre-eminent means of expressing individuality. The book ranges from musty antique shops to luxurious emporia, from suburban semi-detached houses to elegant city villas, from husbands fretting about mantelpieces to women appropriating home decoration as a feminist cause. It uncovers a society of consumers whose identities have become entwined with the things they put in their houses.

The Victorian home

Oxford ; Long Island City, New York : Shire Publications, 2016.

 Abstract

"The nineteenth century saw huge changes in design and technology that meant that a middle-class home looked very different by the time Queen Victoria died in 1901 to how it had at her accession in 1837. This book looks at the social history of rooms in the Victorian home and at how, thanks to industrialised mass production, people were empowered to make choices about how to decorate their homes. Numerous exterior and interior styles were available as Victorian architects and designers grappled towards a new decorative language by testing the best from the past. This meant that families could choose to live in an Italianate villa, a semi-detached Gothic or a Queen Anne terraced home. From the 1870s, the Arts and Crafts Movement rejected consumption for consumption’s sake and gave us a brand of interior design still relevant and appreciated today"--Publisher desctiption.

The Cosmopolitan interior : liberalism and the British home, 1870-1914

 Contents

The middle-class interior before 1870 -- Individuality and eclectic internationalism -- Science, progress, and the role of the elite --The cosmopolitan interior and the empowerment of women -- Liberal values in conflict and decline -- "A nation in miniature."

Abstract

Literature on domestic interior decoration first emerged as a popular genre in Britain during the 1870s and 1880s, as middle-class readers sought decorating advice from books, household manuals, women’s magazines, and professional journals. This intriguing book examines that literature and shows how it was influenced by the widespread liberalism of the middle class. Judith Neiswander explains that during these years liberal values-individuality, cosmopolitanism, scientific rationalism, the progressive role of the elite, and the emancipation of women-informed advice about the desirable appearance of the home. In the period preceding the First World War, these values changed dramatically: advice on decoration became more nationalistic in tone and a new goal was set for the interior-"to raise the British child by the British hearth." Neiswander traces this evolving discourse within the context of current writing on interior decoration, writing that is much more detached from social and political issues of the day.

New Nordic colour : decorating with a vibrant modern palette

London : Ryland Peters & Small, 2017

 Abstract

Scandinavian style has long been associated with light, clean-lined spaces or pared-down monochrome interiors. However, in recent years the colour palette has seen a dramatic shift away from pale, cool shades and dramatic, darker and more characterful hues have begun to appear in stylish Nordic homes. Why have the Scandinavians suddenly welcomed colour in this way and how is it being used? As well as discussing the theories behind this shift and analysis of the most popular colour schemes, in New Nordic Colour interiors writer Antonia af Petersen offers expert advice on choosing colour for your home. She goes on to visit 10 Nordic homes that are divided into three different types. ’Dark Eclectic’ schemes feature deep, intense hues: dusk blue, storm grey, forest green and indigo, all inspired by the more dramatic tones of the Nordic landscape. ’Bold Accents’ focuses on the details that stand out and add character – think deep red berry bushes or the russet tones of the northern birch forests in Autumn. Finally, in ’Majestic Pastels’ Antonia provides a glimpse into interiors decorated in strong but subtle pastels for a remarkably modern effect. These unique Nordic homes all have one thing in common – plain white walls and monochrome palettes have been replaced with rich, complex and vibrant hues.

Abstract

For designers, writing and research skills are more necessary than ever before, from the basic business compositions to critical writing. In this competitive climate, designers are routinely called upon to make words about the images and designs they create for clients. Writing about design is not just "trade" writing, but should be accessible to everyone with an interest in design. This book is a complete, introductory guide to various forms of research and writing in design—and how they explain visuals and can be visualized. These pages address communication on various levels and to all audiences: - Designers to Designers - Designers to Clients - Designers to the Design-literate - Designers to the Design-agnostic Being able to express the issues and concerns of the design practice demands facts, data, and research. With Writing and Research for Graphic Designers, you’ll learn how to turn information into a valuable asset— one of the key talents of the design researcher.

Lepage, Jean-François

Jean-François Lepage : moonlight zoo

Munich : Prestel, 2015.

 Abstract

"This monograph on the renowned French photographer celebrates Jean-François Lepage’s thoroughly unconventional approach to fashion photography, as well his equally captivating drawings, and deconstructed images. Jean-François Lepage is a photographer whose working methods are closer to that of a painter. His paradoxically alluring and disquieting photographs bare evidence to a process in which he physically cuts, draws, and works into their surface to intricately evolve and strongly deconstruct the original image. Working not only as a fashion photographer, but also as a visual artist, he has creatively merged the two worlds creating a beautiful, hitherto unpublished series of images. Imbued with color, these photographs are at once dreamlike and disturbing, alienating and meditative, revealing the work of a celebrated artist who has never foundered from his quest to decontextualize fashion photography into something wholly original."--Provided by publisher.

Wildside : the enchanted life of hunters and gatherers

Berlin : Gestalten, 2016.

Abstract

Step into the woods —refuge and escape and home. Some go there to hike or fish. The people and projects presented in this book do so much more. Join them as they gather honey from wild hives and pick mushrooms from beneath secretive oaks. Build a cabin of your own, or a look‑out up in the treetops. Bike trails, walking paths, woodcrafts. Anything and everything to experience the forest, both architectural and intangible. With profiles and essays that inspire us to step off the beaten path and photographs that bring the experience home, Wildside is the guide to modern outdoor activities. Obi Kaufmann’s works of poetry and illustration echo the feeling and vibrations of the California wilderness. Working within the realm of conservation and possessing a passion for defending the wilderness, his creations spin a thread of environmental awareness and artistic honesty. Christian Watson interweaves tradition with his perspective as a millennial. He sheds technology and creature comforts to live within the world and the landscape. Juniper Ridge captures the scent and essence of the wild; their dedicated crew is at home crafting around a campfire and foraging for ingredients off forest trails. These members of the cast of characters, and of hunters and gatherers, share the joy they receive from existing with and within nature, side by side with the murmurs and growls of the outdoors. Wildside is their collective narrative.

Abstract

Bringing together young musicians from Palestine, Israel and the other countries of the Middle East, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is both one of the most acclaimed youth orchestras in the world and a powerful ray of hope in a war-torn region. Founded by Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said in 1999, it aims to promote Arab-Israeli understanding through music. In ’An Orchestra Beyond Borders’, Elena Cheah, a professional musician and assistant to Daniel Barenboim, explores the orchestra’s journey through the remarkable stories of its members. Through the prism of the orchestra, these youthful testimonies are a window into the life of the region. Together, they express the musicians’ ambitions and hopes, their varied and conflicting views on life and politics, and above all the orchestra’s transformative ability to create an atmosphere of musical cooperation across political lines.

Abstract

Sitting prominently at the hearth of our homes, television serves as a voice of our modern time. Given our media-saturated society and television’s prominent voice and place in the home, it is likely we learn about our society and selves through these stories. These narratives are not simply entertainment, but powerful socializing agents that shape and reflect the world and our role in it. Television and the Self: Knowledge, Identity, and Media Representation brings together a diverse group of scholars to investigate the role television plays in shaping our understanding of self and family. This edited collection’s rich and diverse research demonstrates how television plays an important role in negotiating self, and goes far beyond the treacly “very special” episodes found in family sit-coms in the 1980s. Instead, the authors show how television reflects our reality and helps us to sort out what it means to be a twenty-first-century man or woman.
