אושר פולק-פיאקסל, דוקטורנטית למיקרוביולוגיה וגנטיקה מולקולרית במעבדתה של פרופ' סיגל בן-יהודה מהאוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים, תציג בהרצאתה מחקר מרתק על מנגנון ההגנה של חיידקים מפני וירוסים בקטריאליים באמצעות מידור בתהליך חלוקת התא. לצד הישגים מדעיים, אושר מתמודדת עם לקויות למידה, הפרעות קשב, ריכוז והיפראקטיביות. בתיכון למדה במסלול מב"ר, אך בזכות התמדה ונחישות, ולמרות כל הקשיים הבלתי פוסקים שבדרך, סיימה את המכינה האקדמית בהצטיינות והמשיכה ללימודי תואר ראשון בביולוגיה, תואר שני במדעים ביו-רפואיים ודוקטורט במסלול הישיר.

לאורך דרכה האקדמית, אושר זכתה בפרס רוטשילד למצוינות אקדמית (2024), בפרס המאמר המצטיין לחוקרים צעירים מטעם IMRIC (2022), ובפרסים בכנסים בינלאומיים על פרזנטציות יוצאות דופן ומחקר רב-רושם. לצד עבודתה המחקרית, אושר מלמדת סטודנטים באקדמיה ומנחה את הדור הבא של המדענים בתוכניות מצטיינים לבגרות במחקר. וכעת, לקראת סיום הדוקטורט וההחלטה על המשך דרכה, אושר שואפת להמשיך לשמש דוגמה להתמדה ונחישות, בעיקר לאלו שמתמודדים עם אתגרים דומים.

The Fascinating Scientific Story and the Personal Journey Behind the Scenes

Osher Pollak-Fiyaksel, a Ph.D. student in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics in the lab of Prof. Sigal Ben-Yehuda at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, will present her fascinating research on how bacteria defend themselves against bacteriophages through compartmentalization during cell division. Alongside her scientific achievements, Osher has faced challenges with learning disabilities and ADHD. Despite these obstacles, through persistence and determination, she completed her pre-academic preparatory program with honors and went on to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Biology, a Master's in Biomedical Sciences, and a direct-track Ph.D.

Throughout her academic journey, Osher has received the Rothschild Excellence Award for Ph.D. research (2024), the IMRIC Best Young Researcher Paper Award (2022), and several awards at international conferences for outstanding presentations and impactful research. In addition to her research, Osher teaches university students and mentors the next generation of scientists in gifted high school research programs. Now, as she nears the completion of her Ph.D. and contemplates her future path, Osher remains committed to serving as a model of perseverance and determination, particularly for those facing similar challenges.
