Abstract
This exciting compendium brings together, for the first time, some of the foremost scholars of René Girard’s mimetic theory, with leading imitation researchers from the cognitive, developmental, and neuro sciences. These chapters explore some of the major discoveries and developments concerning the foundational, yet previously overlooked, role of imitation in human life, revealing the unique theoretical links that can now be made from the neural basis of social interaction to the structure and evolution of human culture and religion. Together, mimetic scholars and imitation researchers are on the cutting edge of some of the most important breakthroughs in understanding the distinctive human capacity for both incredible acts of empathy and compassion as well as mass antipathy and violence. As a result, this interdisciplinary volume promises to help shed light on some of the most pressing and complex questions of our contemporary world.

Abstract
Ideas are the true currency of the twenty-first century. So, in order to succeed you need to be able to sell yourself and your ideas persuasively. The ability to sell yourself and your ideas is the single greatest skill that will help you accomplish your dreams. TED Talks have redefined the elements of a successful presentation and become the gold standard for public speaking. TED―which stands for technology, entertainment, and design―brings together the world’s leading innovators and thinkers. Their online presentations have been viewed more than a billion times. These are the presentations that set the world on fire, and the techniques that top TED speakers use are the same ones that will make any presentation more dynamic, fire up any team, and give anyone the confidence to overcome their fear of public speaking. Public speaking coach and bestselling author of The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs, Carmine Gallo has broken down hundreds of TED talks and interviewed the most popular TED presenters as well as the top researchers in the fields of psychology, communications, and neuroscience to get their cutting-edge insights and to reveal the nine secrets of all successful TED presentations. From "Unleash the Master Within" and "Deliver Jaw-Dropping Moments" to "Stick to the 18-minute Rule," Gallo provides a step-by-step method that makes it possible for anyone to create, design, and deliver a TED-style presentation that is engaging, persuasive, and memorable. Many people have a fear of public speaking or they’re insecure about their ability to give a TED-worthy presentation. Talk Like TED will give you the tools to create presentations around the ideas that matter most to you, the skill to win over hearts and minds, and the confidence to deliver the talk of your life. Harpham, Geoffrey Galt
Chicago : University Of Chicago Press, [1993]
Abstract
In this bold interdisciplinary work, Geoffrey Galt Harpham argues that asceticism has played a major role in shaping Western ideas of the body, writing, ethics, and aesthetics. He suggests that we consider the ascetic as "the ’cultural’ element in culture," and presents a close analysis of works by Athanasius, Augustine, Matthias, Grünewald, Nietzsche, Foucault, and other thinkers as proof of the extent of asceticism’s resources. Harpham demonstrates the usefulness of his findings by deriving from asceticism a "discourse of resistance," a code of interpretation ultimately more generous and humane than those currently available to us.

An atelier of rivals : constructive competition -- 5. The mosaic of history : tesserae and continuum -- 6. Metamorphosis : found in translation -- 7. On invention -- 8. The end of emulation -- 9. Coda : the case for emulation.
Abstract
Emulation is a challenging middle ground between imitation and invention. The idea of rivaling by means of imitation, as old as the Aeneid and as modern as Michelangelo, fit neither the pessimistic deference of the neoclassicists nor the revolutionary spirit of the Romantics. Emulation thus disappeared along with the Renaissance humanist tradition, but it is slowly being recovered in the scholarship of Roman art. It remains to recover emulation for the Renaissance itself, and to revivify it for modern practice.Mayernik argues that it was the absence of a coherent understanding of emulation that fostered the fissuring of artistic production in the later eighteenth century into those devoted to copying the past and those interested in continual novelty, a situation solidified over the course of the nineteenth century and mostly taken for granted today. This book is a unique contribution to our understanding of the historical phenomenon of emulation, and perhaps more importantly a timely argument for its value to contemporary practice.

Abstract
Abstract
This lavishly illustrated volume is the first major global history of ornament from the Middle Ages to today. Crossing historical and geographical boundaries in unprecedented ways and considering the role of ornament in both art and architecture, Histories of Ornament offers a nuanced examination that integrates medieval, Renaissance, baroque, and modern Euroamerican traditions with their Islamic, Indian, Chinese, and Mesoamerican counterparts. At a time when ornament has re-emerged in architectural practice and is a topic of growing interest to art and architectural historians, the book reveals how the long history of ornament illuminates its global resurgence today.
Organized by thematic sections on the significance, influence, and role of ornament, the book addresses ornament’s current revival in architecture, its historiography and theories, its transcontinental mobility in medieval and early modern Europe and the Middle East, and its place in the context of industrialization and modernism. Throughout, Histories of Ornament emphasizes the portability and politics of ornament, figuration versus abstraction, cross-cultural dialogues, and the constant negotiation of local and global traditions.Featuring original essays by more than two dozen scholars from around the world, this authoritative and wide-ranging book provides an indispensable reference on the histories of ornament in a global context.

Abstract
"Beauty -- the book, born out of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum’s 2015 Triennial of the same name, curated by Andrea Lipps and Ellen Lupton -- showcases some of the most exciting and provocative design created around the globe during the past three years. These pages aim not to emphasize the hidden beauty in the everyday -- a beloved teapot or favorite shoe -- but to locate transformational beauty in contemporary design that is exuberant, ethereal, atmospheric, experiential, exceptional or sublime. Sixty-two designers represent a vast range of disciplines from architecture, fashion, digital, graphic, and product design, to interiors, hair, nail and lighting design. The objects featured cause us to take pause, catch our breath and get lost in our pursuit to understand or explain them. Designed by the innovative Kimberly Varella, the book is itself a tactile, fluid and provocative interpretation of beauty. Varella’s design provides unexpected points of entry, playing with the concepts of beauty by using reflective surfaces, hot pink thread weaving pages together and a "heart" of the book, from which all else flows. Ethereal, Intricate, Extravagant, Transformative, Transgressive, Elemental and Emergent Beauty are the seven themes. Each section includes the individual designers in conversation with the curators about her or his process and beauty’s differing forms, punctuated by rich galleries of their work, generating the ultimate feast for the senses"--Publisher’s description.

Abstract
A history of graffiti and unsanctioned street art explores its local origins and its transformation into a global phenomenon, discussing its outlaw status, key artists, and the spread of self-expression in social spaces.
The last outlaw of visual disciplines: Graffiti and unsanctioned art—from local origins to global phenomenon In recent years street art has grown bolder, more ornate, more sophisticated and—in many cases—more acceptable. Yet unsanctioned public art remains the problem child of cultural expression, the last outlaw of visual disciplines. It has also become a global phenomenon of the 21st century. Made in collaboration with featured artists, Trespass examines the rise and global reach of graffiti and urban art, tracing key figures, events and movements of self-expression in the city’s social space, and the history of urban reclamation, protest, and illicit performance. The first book to present the full historical sweep, global reach and technical developments of the street art movement, Trespass features key works by 150 artists, and connects four generations of visionary outlaws including Jean Tinguely, Spencer Tunick, Keith Haring, Os Gemeos, Jenny Holzer, Barry McGee, Gordon Matta-Clark, Shepard Fairey, Blu, Billboard Liberation Front, Guerrilla Girls and Banksy, among others. It also includes dozens of previously unpublished photographs of long-lost works and legendary, ephemeral urban artworks
Also includes: •Unpublished images of street art by Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat •Unpublished photographs by Subway Art luminary Martha Cooper •Unpublished photos from the personal archives of selected artists •Incisive essays by Anne Pasternak (director of public arts fund Creative Time) and civil rights lawyer Tony Serra •Special feature: exclusive preface by Banksy

Abstract
The life, thought, and work of Boris Schatz - artist, visionary, and man of action - are inseparably intertwined with Jewish and Zionist cultural history of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. In fact, Schatz had a unique influence on the emergence of Israeli culture. He founded the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts, opened in Jerusalem in 1906 and later to become the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, as well as the Bezalel National Museum, forerunner of the Israel Museum, and thus set a formal starting point for Israeli art. He dreamed of nothing less than creating a center in Jerusalem for the birth of a new Hebraic art, a center that would gather students from near and far, from the budding Zionist immigration and from the Jewish Diaspora, and would attract artists from all over the world. He saw this center, with a great museum as one of its pillars, as a contemporary Third Temple - a powerhouse of spiritual energy that would radiate its ideals to the entire Jewish people and inspire a renewed national identity.
It is now one hundred years since Schatz opened the Bezalel School, and the timing of this exhibition holds a special significance for us at the Israel Museum. It follows on our 40th Anniversary series of exhibitions on the themes of Beauty and Sanctity, a fitting context for honoring a man who was the Museum’s founding father and who aspired to be "a high priest of art." At the same time the exhibition inaugurates the Bezalel centenary celebrations, underscoring the historic connection between Israel’s leading cultural institution and its largest school of art - both offspring of the vision of Boris Schatz. The exhibition presents the two key aspects of Schatz’s oeuvre: his personal creative output of sculptures, reliefs, and paintings; together with works inspired by his activities in the public sphere - a selection of important objects created in the Bezalel workshops according to Schatz’s concept of art and design.

Abstract
Although scholars have emphasized the importance of isolating the objective evaluation of evidence from interpretation, in practice, it has proved difficult to determine the distinction. This study examines the scholarship on description for a select number of well-known Greek statues from the eighteenth-century through the present. The impact of the historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts of this specialized scholarship is demonstrated through considerations of issues such as ethnicity, psychology, theories about artistic form, and evolving conceptions of nude and clothed figures.
"This book explores the role of description in the interpretation of ancient Greek statuary. Although scholars have emphasized the importance of separating objective evaluation of evidence from interpretation, in practice the distinction is problematic. Even at the level of observation and vocabulary, the scholarship on Greek sculpture has been molded by concepts and convictions that impose particular interpretations on the material. This study examines the scholarship from the eighteenth century through the present on a select number of well-known Greek statues. The impact of the historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts that produced this specialized scholarship is demonstrated through considerations of issues such as ethnicity, psychology, theories about artistic form, and evolving conceptions of nude and clothes figures

Abstract
Between 1935 and 1985, the design community in New York was thriving. Inspired by distinguished educators and promoted in style magazines and illustrated books, interior designers acquired elite status and social prominence, often equal to that of their illustrious clients. When fashion-conscious urban professionals joined New York s Old World establishment, new modes of urban living evolved. Along with high-rise apartments, penthouses, and town houses, the downtown loft developed as a new genre for Manhattan luxury living. The challenges presented by these raw spaces led to inventive design solutions and decorative treatments. New York Interior Design, 1935-1985: Masters of Modernism brings together over 250 photographs of exceptional interiors by practitioners who boldly challenged traditional concepts of design. Among featured designers are the iconoclastic Alan Buchsbaum, who pioneered such unorthodox concepts as exposed cooking areas, bathtubs out in the open, and was the first to treat old tin ceilings, pipes, and structural beams as decorative elements; the incomparable Barbara D Arcy whose trendsetting model rooms for Bloomingdale s electrified the 1960s and 1970s; the color virtuoso Juan Montoya; and the architectural firm Shelton, Mindel, known for elegant minimalist spaces approached with a curator s eye. New York Interior Design, 1935-1985: Masters of Modernism is the companion volume to New York Interior Design, 1935-1985: Inventors of Tradition.

History’s diverse beauties -- The philosophy of the nineteenth century -- Eclecticism and literary modernity -- Alfred Tennyson : the originality of medley -- Charles Kingsley : the Alexandrian age -- Matthew Arnold : the second best life -- Walter Pater and Thomas Hardy : "triumph in mutability".
Abstract
“The burden of the past” invoked by any discussion of eclecticism is a familiar aspect of modernity, particularly in the history of literature. The Age of Eclecticism: Literature and Culture in Britain, 1815–1885 by Christine Bolus-Reichert aims to reframe that dynamic and to place it in a much broader context by examining the rise of a manifold eclecticism in the nineteenth century. Bolus-Reichert focuses on two broad understandings of eclecticism in the period—one understood as an unreflective embrace of either conflicting beliefs or divergent historical styles, the other a mode of critical engagement that ultimately could lead to a rethinking of the contrast between creation and criticism and of the very idea of the original. She also contributes to the emerging field of transnational Victorian studies and, in doing so, finds a way to talk about a broader, post-Romantic nineteenth-century culture. By reviving eclecticism as a critical term, Bolus-Reichert historicizes the theoretical language available to us for describing how Victorian culture functioned—in order to make the terrain of Victorian scholarship international and comparative and create a place for the Victorians in the genealogy of postmodernism. The Age of Eclecticism gives Victorianists—and other students of nineteenth-century literature and culture—a new perspective on familiar debates that intersect in crucial ways with issues still relevant to literature in an age of multiculturalism and postmodernism.
