Abstract One can rightly say of Peter Sloterdijk that each of his essays and lectures is also an unwritten book. That is why the texts presented here, which sketch a philosophical physiognomy of Martin Heidegger, should also be characterized as a collected renunciation of exhaustiveness. In order to situate Heidegger’s thought in the history of ideas and problems, Peter Sloterdijk approaches Heidegger’s work with questions such as: If Western philosophy emerged from the spirit of the polis, what are we to make of the philosophical suitability of a man who never made a secret of his stubborn attachment to rural life? Is there a provincial truth of which the cosmopolitan city knows nothing? Is there a truth in country roads and cabins that would be able to undermine the universities with their standardized languages and globally influential discourses? From where does this odd professor speak, when from his professorial chair in Freiburg he claims to inquire into what lies beyond the history of Western metaphysics? Sloterdijk also considers several other crucial twentieth-century thinkers who provide some needed contrast for the philosophical physiognomy of Martin Heidegger. A consideration of Niklas Luhmann as a kind of contemporary version of the Devil’s Advocate, a provocative critical interpretation of Theodor Adorno’s philosophy that focuses on its theological underpinnings and which also includes reflections on the philosophical significance of hyperbole, and a short sketch of the pessimistic thought of Emil Cioran all round out and deepen Sloterdijk’s attempts to think with, against, and beyond Heidegger. Finally, in essays such as "Domestication of Being" and the "Rules for the Human Park," which incited an international controversy around the time of its publication and has been translated afresh for this volume, Sloterdijk develops some of his most intriguing and important ideas on anthropogenesis, humanism, technology

ספרו של זאב לוי מחשבות על המוות מתמקד בשאלת המוות והמיתה כפי שהם משתקפים בהגות הפילוסופית לדורותיה ובזמננו, כמו גם במחשבת ישראל ובמקורות היהדות. הדיון במוות עוסק בעיקר בהיבטים מטפיזיים ועיוניים, בשעה שהדיון במיתה נדרש להשלכות פילוסופיות-אתיות במספר סוגיות בעלות משמעויות אקטואליות יותר, כגון אויתנזיה, הפלה מלאכותית, התאבדות ועונש מוות. בעיות אלה אינן דנות במוות המוני – כתוצאה ממלחמות, אסונות טבע, מגפות וכדומה – אלא הן כרוכות בהכרעה אישית של אדם על חייו ומותו של אדם אחר. את הספר חותם אפילוג המלבן את סוגיית המוות בפילוסופיה של עמנואל לוינס, אחד ההוגים החשובים ביותר של המאה ה-20. לוינס עוסק בין היתר בשאלת האלמוות, דהיינו מה מצפה – אם מצפה בכלל משהו – לאדם עם מותו. בניגוד להיידגר, לוינס שולל את ההשקפה כי המוות הוא ודאות אונטולוגית שאינה דורשת שום התנסות להשגתה, וכי החיים הם "ריצה אל המוות". לדעתו, המוות מתגלם בהתנסות במותם של אחרים. מה שקורה לאחר המוות נשאר פתוח לספקולציה, שכן אף אחד עדיין לא חזר משם. כמו שפינוזה בזמנו, גם לוינס רואה את מהות האדם בחיים ולא במוות. הוא פרופסור אמריטוס לפילוסופיה ולמחשבת ישראל בעת החדשה. תחומי העיון העיקריים שלו הם הרמנויטיקה, סטרוקטורלי Per.Sub. לוינס, עמנואל -- 1906-1995

Abstract Despite an extensive literature on homelessness there is surprisingly little work that investigates the roots of homelessness by tracking homeless people over time. In this fascinating and much-needed ethnographic study, Megan Ravenhill presents the results of ten years’ research on the streets and in the hostels and day-centres of the UK, incorporating intensive interviews with 150 homeless and formerly homeless people as well as policy makers and professionals working with homeless people. Ravenhill discusses the biographical, structural and behavioural factors that lead to homelessness. Amongst the important and unique features of the study are: the use of life-route maps showing the circumstances and decisions that lead to homelessness, a systematic study of the timescales involved, and a survey of people’s exit routes from homelessness. Ravenhill also identifies factors that predict those most vulnerable to homelessness and factors that prevent or considerably delay the onset of homelessness.

Abstract In The Aesthetics of Imagination in Design, Mads Folkmann investigates design in both material and immaterial terms. Design objects, Folkmann argues, will always be dual phenomena—material and immaterial, sensual and conceptual, actual and possible. Drawing on formal theories of aesthetics and the phenomenology of imagination, he seeks to answer fundamental questions about what design is and how it works that are often ignored in academic research. Folkmann considers three conditions in design: the possible, the aesthetic, and the imagination. Imagination is a central formative power behind the creation and the life of design objects; aesthetics describes the sensual, conceptual, and contextual codes through which design objects communicate; the concept of the possible—the enabling of new uses, conceptions, and perceptions—lies behind imagination and aesthetics. The possible, Folkmann argues, is contained as a structure of meaning within the objects of design, which act as part of our interface with the world. Taking a largely phenomenological perspective that reflects both continental and American pragmatist approaches, Folkmann also makes use of discourses that range from practice-focused accounts of design methodology to cultural studies. Throughout, he offers concrete examples to illustrate theoretical points. Folkmann’s philosophically informed account shows design—in all its manifestations, from physical products to principles of organization—to be an essential medium for the articulation and transformation of culture.

Abstract The Aesthetics of Design offers the first full treatment of design in the field of philosophical aesthetics. Aesthetic theory has traditionally occupied itself with fine art in all its forms, sometimes with craft, and often with notions of beauty and sublimity in art and nature. In so doing, it has largely ignored the quotidian and familiar objects and experiences that make up our daily lives. Yet how we interact with design involves aesthetic choices and judgements as well as practical, cognitive and moral considerations. This work challenges the discipline to broaden its scope to include design, and illustrates how aesthetics helps define our human concerns. Subjecting design to as rigorous a treatment as any other aesthetic object exposes it to three main challenges that form the core of this book. First, design must be distinguished from art and craft as a unique kind of object meriting separate philosophical attention, and is here defined in part by its functional qualities. Second, the experience of design must be defended as having a particularly aesthetic nature. Here Forsey adapts the Kantian notion of dependent beauty to provide a model for our appreciation of design as different from our judgements of art, craft and natural beauty. Finally, design is important for aesthetics and philosophy as a whole in that it is implicated in broader human concerns. Forsey situates her theory of design as a constructive contribution to the recent movement of Everyday Aesthetics, which seeks to re-enfranchise philosophical aesthetics as an important part of philosophy at large.

Abstract הדימוי של אפרודיטה/ונוס שימש תמיד קנה מידה ליופי הנשי, החל מתרבות יוון ורומא, דרך יצירות פיסול וציור לאורך תולדות האמנות וכלה באמנות ובפרסום כיום. דימוי זה כונן גוף אידיאלי בלתי אפשרי, רחוק מהגוף הריאלי, והוא בעל השלכות רבות עד היום על תפיסת הגוף הנשי בכל תחומי החיים; הוא גורם לנשים להתאים את גופן למודל הקלאסי על ידי דיאטה וניתוחים פלסטיים, הוא גורם לאנורקסיה ולבעיות פסיכולוגיות שנובעות מדימוי עצמי. ספר זה מציג מבחר יצירות אמנות פמיניסטיות החותרות תחת תפיסת היופי הנשי המבוססת על המודל של אפרודיטה/ונוס, תוך כדי שימוש באסטרטגיות שונות של התנגדות – גלויות או מוסוות. על ידי ניכוס דמותה של ונוס (עומדת, שרועה או כורעת) ערערו האמניות הפמיניסטיות על האיקוניוּת של הדימוי, התנגדו למודל יופי אחד והציעו ריבוי של מושגי היופי. המבוא לספר מציג את התשתית התיאורטית ליצירת קנון היופי ביוון העתיקה, לצד מיפוי העמדות הפמיניסטיות המרכזיות הנוגעות להבניית "נשיות" ו"יופי נשי". החלק הראשון של הספר דן באמנית המולטימדיה הצרפתייה אורלן (Orlan) אשר מנכסת ביצירותיה את דימויי ונוס בעזרת ניתוחים פלסטיים שהופכים למייצגים, ובכך מביאה את יצירתה לסף, להסגת גבול. החלק השני של הספר מתמקד באמנית האמרי

Abstract זיופים הם נושא מרתק. זיוף קיים למעשה בכל תחומי החיים, לא רק באמנות. היו שניסו לשכתב את ההיסטוריה באמצעות זיופים, היו שניסו לרכוש לעצמם שם בעולם המדע על בסיס ראיות מומצאות. סימן השאלה בכותרת אינו מקרי. התערוכה מציבה הרבה סימני שאלה. מה בין זיוף לציטוט או מחווה, למשל? כמה אותנטיות יציקות הפיסול המאוחרות של דגה? והאם מניעיו של זייפן הם בהכרח בצע כסף או מוניטין, או אולי קיימות סיבות אחרות? -- מן ההקדמה

Abstract רובנו עובדים היכן שהוא, במקום כלשהו. שעות רבות גופינו רכון מעל מכונה, איברינו מפעילים אותה. כך, מדי יום, בסדר חזרתי. אבל הימים שלנו אינם דומים. דרישות מקצועיות, שעות עבודה, תנאי העסקה, שכר עבודתנו – כל אלה מבדילים אותנו האחד מהשני. גם סביבות העבודה שלנו שונות. נוף התעשייה הוא מגוון: רחובות, מבננים, קמפוסים, קופסאות, רכבות ומגדלים המעוצבים באופן הקשור למערך הייצור והמיתוג של המקום. נופים אשר עוקבים אחר הלך הרוח של השוק אשר קובע מי מהמפעלים ייסגר, מי יצמח ויגדל, איזו חברה תימכר לתאגיד בינלאומי או תועתק למחוז רחוק. זהו נוף העשייה, נוף זמני שמשפיע ומעצב את עולמנו. מבט על הנוף התעשייתי בישראל חושף תמונת מצב מורכבת: ריבוי אזורי תעשייה, לעתים סמוכים מאוד זה לזה, מתחרים אחד בשני ללא ראייה אסטרטגית כוללנית; חלוקה לא צודקת של המשאבים, אשר במסגרתה רשויות סמוכות לאזור התעשייה לא תמיד שותפות לרווחיו; התפשטות הבינוי בשטחים פתוחים ובזבוז משאבי קרקע; ובעיקר, תפיסה אוטונומית של אזור התעשייה והיעדר חיבור מרחבי, ניהולי או תפקודי בינו לבין המרקם העירוני. אך גם בתמונת המצב המורכבת הזאת, הנטועה בהקשר של זמן ומקום, ניתן לזהות דפוסים חזרתיים, תצורות מרחביות שעל פיהן מתפתח הנוף התעשייתי. הספ
