Every tool or instrument used by humans since the dawn of civilization involves some form of design. Ever since the industrial revolution, this universal practice has become a profession called Industrial Design. Highly multidisciplinary in its essence, Industrial Design addresses challenges across diverse sectors, with designers creating functional objects that embody cultural, social, and commercial values.

Today’s industrial designers are involved in every stage of product development, impacting product strategies from the initial concept through factors of form and materials, to market penetration and beyond. For the designers themselves, the profession offers numerous growth opportunities – from handcrafted artifacts to complex technological devices, and from an independent career path to leadership in large organizations

B.Des. in Industrial Design

Our Industrial Design program equips students with extensive knowledge alongside a vast range of soft and technical skills, teaching them how to translate their expertise into impactful production processes and products that tangibly improve people’s lives.

The program maintains deep ties with industry, enabling students to develop tangible products that address real-world needs. This collaboration allows them to gain experience in industrial processes and build professional relationships with potential clients and employers.

Our workshops offer a highly creative environment, equipped with a vast range of state-of-the-art tools – from heavy machinery and advanced software, through soft materials and ceramics, to a 3D printing farm. Here, in a setting that encourages inventiveness and creative thinking, students acquire a great deal of hands-on experience.

Studies consist of several layers:

  • Core studio courses that form the program’s academic foundations – by simulating design processes and engaging students in real-world professional challenges and opportunities.
  • Foundational Courses – providing critical tools and knowledge – such as research, analysis, critical thinking, digital skills, ergonomics, electronics, programming, interactive design, and design in AI environments.
  • Applied Research & Innovation – developing novel solutions for numerous social, environmental, cultural or commercial challenges, culminating with each student’s original final project.
  • Elective courses – offering students an opportunity to hone specific skills – such as design with a focus on social/environmental responsibility, designing furniture, toys, or bicycles, etc.

With AI transforming the discipline (like so many others) we make great efforts to incorporate crucial new technologies into the program. At the same time, we strive to bolster exclusively human advantages – like empathy, common sense and responsibility, creativity and innovation, boldness and initiative, associative thinking and a sense of curiosity.

Students

Industrial Design students at HIT are very creative, intelligent and curious individuals, who also enjoy working with their hands.

They bring with them a good eye for aesthetics, thought-provoking insights, and an original perspective on their surroundings – solid foundations for growth in this unique profession.

Alumni

Most of our alumni find employment soon after graduation, and many rise to leading positions in various design firms, corporations and technological companies. Others prefer to establish their own businesses or acquire advanced academic degrees in a broad range of disciplines.

We keep in touch with our alumni and invite them as visiting lecturers in our various courses.

Some even come back to participate in activities or teach the emerging generations that follow in their footsteps

Faculty

The Department’s faculty is comprised of active industrial designers, including prominent leaders of the field in Israel. Driven by a shared mission, they are deeply committed to teaching and mentoring the profession’s next generation.
