Nuclear Threat: Practical Aspects

The presentation contains basic facts regarding nuclear

weapons' design and history. Both nuclear (atomic) and thermo-

nuclear (hydrogen) designs are addressed, as well as compact nuclear designs fitting field artillery. Nuclear proliferation

- which seems inevitable - is also considered. The hit factors (shock wave, light emission, penetrating radiation, radioactive fallout and EMP) are analysed, and their scaling with yield is

reviewed (with Hiroshima bombing as a test-case example). Unlike

a wide-spread misconception, Hiroshima-size A-bomb has devastation radius about 1 km, with about 50% survival at 0.5 km from "ground zero", and negligible-to-moderate fallout afteraction. Recommenda- tions for damage mitigation are given.
