Abstract

"This book is suitable as a textbook for an introductory undergraduate mathematics course on discrete Fourier and wavelet transforms for students with background in calculus and linear algebra. The particular strength of this book is its accessibility to students with no background in analysis. The exercises and computer explorations provide the reader with many opportunities for active learning. Studying from this text will also help students strengthen their background in linear algebra." Mathematical Association of America This textbook for undergraduate mathematics, science, and engineering students introduces the theory and applications of discrete Fourier and wavelet transforms using elementary linear algebra, without assuming prior knowledge of signal processing or advanced analysis. It explains how to use the Fourier matrix to extract frequency information from a digital signal and how to use circulant matrices to emphasize selected frequency ranges. It introduces discrete wavelet transforms for digital signals through the lifting method and illustrates through examples and computer explorations how these transforms are used in signal and image processing. Then the general theory of discrete wavelet transforms is developed via the matrix algebra of two-channel filter banks. Finally, wavelet transforms for analog signals are constructed based on filter bank results already presented, and the mathematical framework of multiresolution analysis is examined.

Abstract

Quantum mechanics is the most successful theory for describing the micro-world of photons, atoms, and their aggregates. It is behind much of the successes of the modern technology. It has deep philosophical implications to the fundamental nature of material reality. A few decades ago it was also realized that it is connected to the computer science and information theory. With this understanding was born the new disciplines of quantum computing and quantum communication. The current book introduces the very exciting area of quantum communication which lies at the intersection of quantum mechanics, information theory, and atomic physics. The relevant concepts of these disciplines are explained and their implication for the task of unbreakably secure communication is elucidated. Mathematical formulation of various approaches are explained and attempt has been made to keep the exposition self-contained.

Space-time adaptive beamforming algorithms for airborne radar systems / Rodrigo de Lamare -- Transmit beamforming for forward-looking space-time radars / Mathini Sellathurai and David Wilcox -- Digital beamforming for synthetic aperture radar / Karen Mak and Athanassios Manikas -- Arrayed MIMO radar: multi-target parameter estimation for beamforming / Harry Commin, Kai Luo and Athanassios Manikas -- Beamforming for wake wave detection and estimation -- an overview / Karen Mak and Athanassios Manikas -- Towed arrays: channel estimation, tracking and beamforming / Vidhya Sridhar, Marc Willerton and Athanassios Manikas -- Array uncertainties and auto-calibration / Marc Willerton, Evangelos Venieris and Athanassios Manikas -- Robust beamforming to pointing errors / Jie Zhuang and Athanassios Manikas

Abstract  Beamforming: Sensor Signal Processing for Defence Applications presents a range of important research contributions concerned with sensor array signal processing and, in particular, with the superresolution beamformers fundamental to many civilian and defence applications. Both space and space-time (STAP) beamforming algorithms and their application to radar systems are considered with emphasis given to "look-down" airborne radars, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), arrayed MIMO radar and a number of common wake-wave detection algorithms for two-dimensional SAR imagery. Furthermore, ocean towed arrays, which find applications in a variety of areas such as defence, oil and gas exploration, and geological and marine life studies, are also considered paying particular attention to receiver positional uncertainties resulting from the array’s flexible structure. Array geometrical and electrical uncertainties, design of auto-calibration algorithms, beamforming "pointing" error uncertainties and robustification issues are also presented. This book is self-contained and unified in its presentation, and comprehensively covers some of the classic and fundamental models of beamforming for sensor signal processing. It is suitable as an advanced textbook for graduate students and researchers in the area of signal processing, as well as a reference book for engineers in the defence industry. Readership: Postgraduate students and researchers working in the area of signal processing as well researchers working in the defence industry. The UDRC runs a series of short courses in signal processing for PhD students and industrial researchers and this book is recommended reading.

Abstract

Russel Wright (1904-1976) was one of America’s great industrial designers. His inexpensive, mass-produced dinnerware, appliances, textiles, and furniture introduced modern design to millions of American households between 1930 and the mid-1960s. In addition to designing objects for the home, Wright also pioneered the concept of "easier living" for the middle class. This text presents a thorough interpretation of Wright’s achievement and his effect on the American domestic environment. His products are examined, his how-to manuals for achieving modern living and his marketing schemes to bring his products and ideas to the public.

Eichler, Joseph

Eichler : modernism rebuilds the American dream

Layton, Utah : Gibbs Smith, [2002].

Abstract

Joseph Eichler was a pioneering developer who defied conventional wisdom by hiring progressive architects to design Modernist homes for the growing middle class of the 1950s. He was known for his innovations, including "built-ins" for streamlined kitchen work, for introducing a multipurpose room adjacent to the kitchen, and for the classic atrium that melded the indoors with the outdoors. For nearly twenty years, Eichler Homes built thousands of dwellings in California, acquiring national and international acclaim. Eichler: Modernism Rebuilds the American Dream examines Eichler’s legacy as seen in his original homes and in the revival of the Modernist movement, which continues to grow today. The homes that Eichler built were modern in concept and expression, and yet comfortable for living. Eichler’s work left a legacy of design integrity and set standards for housing developers that remain unparalleled in the history of American building. This book captures and illustrates that legacy with impressive detail, engaging history, firsthand recollections about Eichler and his vision, and 250 photographs of Eichler homes in their prime. Paul Adamson, AIA, holds a Master of Architecture degree from Columbia University and has practiced in New York and San Francisco. He is currently a designer at the San Francisco firm of Hornberger + Worstell, Inc. He lives in Kensington, California. Marty Arbunich is director-publisher of the Eichler Network, a Bay Area-based company devoted exclusively to supporting and preserving the architecture and lifestyle surrounding California’s 11,000 Eichler homes. He lives in San Francisco.

Graphic design in Germany : 1890 - 1945

Abstract

German graphic and typographic design in the first half of the twentieth century represents an extraordinarily rich and diverse aspect of the history of visual culture. It marks the moment of recognition that the world was becoming increasingly dependent on a modern and commercialized system of communication in which the designer was to play a major role. An unprecedented scale of attention was devoted to printed matter, whether as designs for graphic ornament, typefaces and logos in books and advertisements, or magazines, posters, signage, and exhibitions. Jeremy Aynsley has written the first account in English of the emergence of German graphic design between 1890 and 1945. Based on many years of research and original material, this handsome book is lavishly illustrated with examples from across a stylistically varied field.

There were many good reasons for Germany to lead in the field of print culture. Historically it was a country that had been associated since the Middle Ages with the arts of the book and printing, and many of the new design developments in the twentieth century grew from that base. The spectacular industrial and commercial boom following the Franco-Prussian War, when the Germans became world competitors, stimulated interest in the field of advertising, whether in newspapers, journals, or on sidewalk kiosks. Perhaps borrowing in the beginning from the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain, Art Nouveau in France, and the advanced advertising designers in the U.S., the German artists soon developed a style of their own that was aggressive, aesthetically adventurous, and well constructed to attract customers. While some of the individual designers such as Peter Behrens, Lucian Bernhard, Jan Tschichold, Herbert Bayer, and John Heartfield are well known, many others have not received such attention. Aynsley provides an amazingly well-rounded picture of this burst of innovation that changed the face of modern life, as well as of the politically and socially turbulent era that spawned it.

Alexander Rodchenko

Genève : Édition d’Art Albert Skira, [2016]

 Abstract

Alexanader Rodchenko was one of the main generators of creative ideas during the extraordinary time of the Russian avant-garde movements, and he perfectly reflected its spiritual atmosphere. In 1924, photography was "invaded" by Rodchenko, resulting in a fundamental rethinking on the nature of photography and the role of the photographer. With the introduction of conceptual considerations, the photograph changed from being a mere reflection of reality to a means of visually representing dynamic intellectual constructions. Throughout the entire history of Russian photography in the first half of the twentieth century, Alexander Rodchenko is the only figure to have left us definitive traces through the publication of articles and diaries: they are the artistic reflections of a thinker-photographer, the witness to a historic cataclysm that generated a tragic conflict in him between conscious supposition and the unconscious creative drive.
