Abstract  ‫

Hearing and the hospital : sound, listening, knowledge and experience

Canon Pyon : Sean Kingston Publishing, [2013]

 Abstract

An original ethnography of sound and listening in one of our major institutions, Hearing and the Hospital reveals the hospital to be a space in which several modes of listening are simultaneously in play and in which different layers of auditory knowledge and experience coexist. Engaging with Sound Studies, the Anthropology of the Senses, Medical Anthropology and Science and Technology Studies in this volume, Tom Rice shows how sound and listening produce, articulate and mediate social relations inside the hospital; how listening acquires direction and focus within that environment; and how certain sounds become endowed with particular meanings and associations. He also exposes many of the sensory minutiae that both underpin and undermine the production of medical knowledge and skill. Hearing and the Hospital creates an acoustic interrogation of hospital life, and in doing so questions accepted ideas about the sense of hearing itself. There’s a great deal to admire in Tom Rice’s ethnography of the aural politics of the hospital. First because it represents a unique conjunction of the ethnography of sound and senses with medical anthropology and social studies of science. Next because it patiently details how sound as a way of knowing so deeply informs social practices of medical listening. And finally because it is so successful in revealing both how hospitals and bodies pulse as acoustic spaces, and how patients and doctors professionalize, personalize, and participate as situated listeners.(Steven Feld, Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and Music, University of New Mexico). Tom Rice is Lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Exeter, and specializes in auditory culture. As well as writing and teaching on sound he has produced audio pieces including the BBC Radio 4 feature The Art of Water Music.

Abstract

No place for dying : hospitals and the ideology of rescue

London : Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2010

 Contents

Hospital dying situations -- Rescue, stabilization, and speed -- Configuring dying and death -- Death with as little dying as possible -- "Every medical action is a transaction" : rescue as industry -- How rescue as industry minimizes dying -- Order out of chaos : the ritual of intensification -- Ritual display, palliative care, and trust -- Making a place for dying in the hospital.

Abstract

The U.S. hospital embodies society’s hope for itself―a technological bastion standing between us and death. What does the gold standard of rescue, as ideology and industry, mean for the dying patient in the hospital and for the status of dying in American culture? This book shows how dying is a management problem for hospitals, occupying space but few billable encounters and of little interest to medical practice or quality control. An anthropologist and bioethicist with two decades of professional nursing experience, Helen Chapple goes beyond current work on hospital care to present fine-grained accounts of the clinicians, patients, and families who navigate this uncharted, untidy, and unpredictable territory between the highly choreographed project of rescue and the clinical culmination of death. This book and its important social and policy implications make key contributions to the social science of medicine, nursing, hospital administration, and health care delivery fields.

Complete synchronization I: basic concepts -- 14. Complete synchronization II: generalizations and complex systems -- 15. Synchronization of complex dynamics by external forces.

Abstract

Systems as diverse as clocks, singing crickets, cardiac pacemakers, firing neurons and applauding audiences exhibit a tendency to operate in synchrony. These phenomena are universal and can be understood within a common framework based on modern nonlinear dynamics. The first half of this book describes synchronization without formulae, and is based on qualitative intuitive ideas. The main effects are illustrated with experimental examples and figures, and the historical development is also outlined. The second half of the book presents the main effects of synchronization in a rigorous and systematic manner, describing both classical results on synchronization of periodic oscillators, and recent developments in chaotic systems, large ensembles, and oscillatory media.

Abstract

Beg, steal and borrow : artists against originality

London : Laurence King Publishing, [2017]

 Contents

 1. How original are you? -- 2. Thou shalt not steal -- 3. But you will be taught to copy -- 4. A brave new multi-authored world -- 5. Gene the art genie -- 6. Remake, reuse, reassemble, recombine : that’s the way to go.

Abstract

Art is theft,’ Picasso once proclaimed, and much of the best and most ‘original’ new art involves an act or two of unequivocal, overt theft. Paradoxically, the law relating to artistic borrowing has grown more restrictive. ‘The plagiarism and copyright trials of the twenty-first century are what the obscenity trials were to the twentieth century’, Kenneth Goldsmith, has observed. ‘These are really the issues of our time.’ Beg, Steal and Borrow offers a comprehensive and provocative survey of a complex subject that is destined to grow in relevance and importance. It traces an artistic lineage of appropriation from Michelangelo to Jeff Koons, and examines the history of its legality from the sixteenth century to now.

Red star over Russia : a revolution in visual culture 1905-55 : a celebration of the David King collection

London : Tate Publishing, [2017]

 Abstract

David King (1943–2016) amassed one of the world’s largest collections of Soviet political art and photographs. In exploring the intersection of art, politics, and society, few collections in the world can compare with the David King Collection, now part of Tate. King was not only a passionate collector, but also an artist, designer, and historian, and he produced revelatory and award-winning books on Soviet design history. Here, every step of the Soviet journey is documented with visual media, photomontage, photographs, paintings, handwritten notes, books (signed with annotations and marginalia), enclosures, and ephemera. Published to accompany an exhibition, this accessible and highly illustrated publication features key pieces from the collection, accompanied by short explanatory texts that bring this exceptional era in design history to life.

Soviet design : preserving the history / Alexandra Sankova (Moscow Design Museum) -- Citizen -- State -- World

Abstract

A fascinating glimpse into design behind the Iron Curtain, revealed through the products and graphics of everyday Soviet life. This captivating survey of Soviet design from 1950 to 1989 features more than 350 items from the Moscow Design Museum’s unique collection. From children’s toys, homewares, and fashion to posters, electronics, and space-race ephemera, each object reveals something of life in a planned economy during a fascinating time in Russia’s history. Organized into three chapters - Citizen, State, and World - the book is a micro-to-macro tour of the functional, kitsch, politicized, and often avant-garde designs from this largely undocumented period.

Abstract

Vincent van Gogh’s (1853-1890) encounter with Japanese ukiyo-e prints during his time in Paris was decisive for the direction that his art would take in the years to come. He enthusiastically assembled a collection of the prints with the idea of dealing in them, and soon was captivated by their colorful and cheerful imagery and style, which began to exert a dramatic influence on his own work. Gradually this enchanted world became his main artistic reference point. From then on, he positioned himself as an artist in the Japanese tradition in order to gain a reputation with the avant-garde of the day. This gorgeous publication offers a detailed reassessment of the impact Japanese printmaking had on Van Gogh’s creative output. Featuring essays by the world’s leading Van Gogh experts, this book details the ways in which the artist constructed his understanding of a Japanese aesthetic and his utopian ideal of a so-called primitive society, and incorporated these into his own vision and practice. The size, nature, and importance of Van Gogh’s own collection of Japanese prints are also explored. Lavish illustrations include oil paintings and drawings by Van Gogh as well as a selection of the Japanese works that so captured his imagination.

Abstract

Beginning by unearthing its historical roots in early reality shows like Candid Camera and wending its way through An American Family, Cops, and The Real World to the most recent crop of reality programs, Reality TV is the first book to address the economic, visual, cultural, and audience dimensions of reality television. The essays provide a complex and comprehensive picture of how and why this genre emerged, what it means, how it differs from earlier television programming, and how it engages societies, industries, and individuals. Topics range from the construction of televisual "reality" to the changing face of criminal violence on TV, to issues of surveillance, taste, and social control.

Lotte Reiniger : pioneer of film animation

Abstract

For three years during the 1920s, in an attic in Potsdam, a young woman crafted what is today the oldest surviving animated feature film. Equipped with scissors, cardboard, sheets of lead, glass panes and a camera, animation pioneer Lotte Reiniger filmed Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed (The Adventures of Prince Achmed) using a technique of frame-by-frame silhouette animation she developed, inspired by Chinese shadow puppetry. As the result of a number of factors--her gender, her German ethnicity, World War II and a lack of funding--Reiniger became a footnote in animation history. Yet her 60-plus films plainly show her skill and dedication to her craft. This detailed account of her life and work describes her significant contributions to animation, puppetry, Weimar cinema and modern filmmaking.
