Abstract

Abstract

Abstract
It is impossible to control another person’s motivation. But much of the instructor’s job involves stimulating learner motivation, and learning environments should ideally be designed toward this goal. Motivational Design for Learning and Performance introduces readers to the core concepts of motivation and motivational design and applies this knowledge to the design process in a systematic step-by-step format. The ARCS model―theoretically robust, rooted in best practices, and adaptable to a variety of practical uses―forms the basis of this problem-solving approach. Separate chapters cover each component of the model―attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction―and offer strategies for promoting each one in learners. From there, the motivational design process is explained in detail, supplemented by real-world examples and ready-to-use worksheets. The methods are applied to traditional and alternative settings, including gifted classes, elementary grades, self-directed learning, and corporate training. And the book is geared toward the non-specialist reader, making it accessible to those without a psychology or teaching background. With this guide, the reader learns how to: •Identify motivation problems and goals •Decide whether the environment or the learners need changing •Generate attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction in learners •Integrate motivational design and instructional design •Select, develop, and evaluate motivational materials •Plus a wealth of tables, worksheets, measures, and other valuable tools aid in the design process Comprehensive and enlightening, Motivational Design for Learning and Performance furnishes an eminently practical body of knowledge to researchers and professionals in performance technology and instructional design as well as educational psychologists, teachers and trainers.

Abstract
From the Inside Flap: Any conversation about effective teaching must begin with a consideration of how students learn. However, instructors may find a gap between resources that focus on the technical research on learning and those that provide practical classroom strategies. How Learning Works provides the bridge for such a gap. In this volume, the authors introduce seven general principles of learning, distilled from the research literature as well as from twenty-seven years of experience working one-on-one with college faculty. They have drawn on research from a breadth of perspectives (cognitive, developmental, and social psychology; educational research; anthropology; demographics; and organizational behavior) to identify a set of key principles underlying learning-from how effective organization enhances retrieval and use of information to what impacts motivation. These principles provide instructors with an understanding of student learning that can help them see why certain teaching approaches are or are not supporting student learning, generate or refine teaching approaches and strategies that more effectively foster student learning in specific contexts, and transfer and apply these principles to new courses. For anyone who wants to improve his or her students’ learning, it is crucial to understand how that learning works and how to best foster it. This vital resource is grounded in learning theory and based on research evidence, while being easy to understand and apply to college teaching.

This book emphasises both experimental and theoretical aspects of surface, interface and thin-film physics. As in previous editions the preparation of surfaces and thin films, their atomic and morphological structure, their vibronic and electronic properties as well as fundamentals of adsorption are treated. Because of their importance in modern information technology and nanostructure research, particular emphasis is paid to electronic surface and interface states, semiconductor space charge layers and heterostructures. A special chapter of the book is devoted to collective phenomena at interfaces and in thin films such as superconductivity and magnetism. The latter topic includes the meanwhile important issues giant magnetoresistance and spin-transfer torque mechanism, both effects being of high interest in information technology. In this new edition, for the first time, the effect of spin-orbit coupling on surface states is treated. In this context the class of the recently detected topological insulators, materials of significant importance for spin electronics, are discussed. Particular emphasis, hereby, is laid on the new type of topologically protected surface states with well-defined spin orientation. Furthermore, some important well established experimental techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and reflection anisotropy spectroscopy (RAS), which were missing so far in earlier editions, were added in this new 6th edition of the book.

Abstract
Avoiding heavy mathematics and lengthy programming details, Digital Image Processing: An Algorithmic Approach with MATLAB® presents an easy methodology for learning the fundamentals of image processing. The book applies the algorithms using MATLAB®, without bogging down students with syntactical and debugging issues. One chapter can typically be completed per week, with each chapter divided into three sections. The first section presents theoretical topics in a very simple and basic style with generic language and mathematics. The second section explains the theoretical concepts using flowcharts to streamline the concepts and to form a foundation for students to code in any programming language. The final section supplies MATLAB codes for reproducing the figures presented in the chapter. Programming-based exercises at the end of each chapter facilitate the learning of underlying concepts through practice. This textbook equips undergraduate students in computer engineering and science with an essential understanding of digital image processing. It will also help them comprehend more advanced topics and sophisticated mathematical material in later courses. Abstract
Color is fundamental to life and art yet so diverse that it has seldom been studied in a comprehensive way. This ground-breaking analysis of color in Western culture from the ancient Greeks to the late twentieth century is a John Gage triumph. With originality and erudition, he describes the first theories of color articulated by philosophers from Democritus to Aristotle and the subsequent attempts by the Romans and their Renaissance disciples to organize color systematically or endow it with symbolic power. The place of color in religion, Newton’s analysis of the spectrum, Goethe’s color theory, and the theories and practices that have attempted to unite color and music are among the intriguing topics this award-winning book illuminates. With a large classified bibliography, discursive footnotes, and an exhaustive index, Color and Culture is an invaluable resource for artists, historians of art and culture, psychologists, linguists, and anyone fascinated by this most inescapable and evocative element of our perceptions.

The Egyptian revival : ancient Egypt

Egypt and Europe -- Some manifestations of Egyptianisms from the time of Trajan to the early Renaissance period -- Further manifestations with Egyptian connotations in Europe from the Renaissance to the beginning of the eighteenth century -- Egyptian elements in eighteenth-century Europe to the time of Piranesi -- The Egyptian revival from the time of Piranesi until the Napoleonic campaigns in Egypt -- The Egyptian revival after the Napoleonic campaigns in Egypt -- Application of the Egyptian style -- The Egyptian revival in funerary architecture -- Aspects of the Egyptian revival in the later part of the nineteenth century -- The Egyptian revival in the twentieth century -- A postscript.
Abstract In this beautifully illustrated and closely argued book, a completely updated and much expanded third edition of his magisterial survey, Curl describes in lively and stimulating prose the numerous revivals of the Egyptian style from Antiquity to the present day. Drawing on a wealth of sources, his pioneering and definitive work analyzes the remarkable and persistent influence of Ancient Egyptian culture on the West. The author deftly develops his argument that the civilization of Ancient Egypt is central, rather than peripheral, to the development of much of Western architecture, art, design, and religion. Curl examines: •the persistence of Egyptian motifs in design from Graeco-Roman Antiquity, through the Medieval, Baroque, and Neo-Classical periods •rise of Egyptology in the nineteenth and twentieth-century manifestations of Egyptianisms prompted by the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb •various aspects of Egyptianizing tendencies in the Art Deco style and afterwards. For students of art, architectural and ancient history, and those interested in western European culture generally, this book will be an inspiring and invaluable addition

One page / Paolo Colombo -- Three etchings by Karin Mamma Andersson / Anders Kruger -- Interview between Marcel Dzama and Jockum, New York 2004 -- Escape / text by Stig Claesson ; revised by Dan Wolgers.
Abstract
The Swedish artist couple Mamma Andersson (born 1962) and Jockum Nordström (born 1963) have been at the forefront of contemporary figurative painting since the late 1980s. Updating Vuillard for a post-Hitchcock age, Andersson paints beguilingly eerie interiors and landscapes. Nordström’s detailed collages, watercolors and drawings occupy a more folkloric realm peopled by historical and contemporary characters enacting sexual and social roles across broad narrative panoramas. Originally published on the occasion of the 2010 exhibition at David Zwirner, New York, Who Is Sleeping on My Pillow marked the first time Andersson and Nordström presented their work in concurrent solo shows, after spending half their lives together while maintaining separate practices. The book showcases Andersson’s and Nordström’s work from the late 1980s to 2010 in over 200 full-color plates. Alongside these, it also includes family snapshots and source materials, texts by Paolo Colombo and Anders Krüger, a poem by Stig Claesson and an interview with Nordström by Marcel Dzama.

Abstract
This is the first all-encompassing book about the visual language of man-made products, explaining how mass-produced objects evolve over time and what made them change. Form evolution behaves in a similar way to language evolution and, to some extent, even to natural evolution. In the book the author materializes the governing rules of form evolution by means of fourteen case studies.

Abstract
Matthew Boulton was an eighteenth-century designer, inventor and industrialist, a consummate businessman and co-founder of the influential Lunar Society. Now, on the bicentenary of his death, this book surveys his life and extraordinarily varied achievements. The book explains how Boulton, a Birmingham ’toy’ maker producing buttons, buckles and silverware, went into business with James Watt and exported Boulton & Watt steam engines all over the world. Meanwhile his magnificent ormolu ornaments decorated aristocratic drawing rooms, and his determination to discourage counterfeiters led to a contract to manufacture British coinage and coins of other countries at his mint. Boulton was leader of the campaign to establish the Birmingham Assay Office (still the busiest in the country), and also at the heart of the Lunar Society, a group of prominent industrialists, natural philosophers, and intellectuals interested in scientific and social change. A friend of Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Erasmus Darwin, Josiah Wedgwood and many others, Boulton was a fascinating man, Britain’s leading Enlightenment entrepreneur.

Abstract
Alessandro Mendini, born in Milan in 1931, is a major theorist and a driving force behind avant-garde design in Italy. Aside from his artistic career, he was also editor of the architecture magazines Casabella and Modo and publisher of the famous ’Domus’ magazine. Considered to be one of the most important contemporary designers in Europe, Mendini’s work places an emphasis on cultural diversity and radical expression. He has also produced many collective projects, such as the museum in Groningen, Netherlands, built with Philippe Starck, Frank Stella, and Michele de Lucchi. He has also worked with important Italian and foreign firms as Zanotta, Alessi, Swatch, Philips, Venini, Bisazza and Cartier. Published in the same style as the successful ’Minimum Architects’ series, the ’Minimum Design’ series includes books about the major figures in the field of design, creators of objects that have become a part of our daily lives. The lamp on our desk, the chair we are sitting on or the glasses we are wearing have a genius behind to be discovered. These volumes will introduce in a practical manner the personalities and the works of the world’s major designers by way of an historical-critical introduction to the work and life of each individual designer. An accurate selection of the designer’s most famous objects arranged in chronological order and a critique of his or her work summarsing the most significant reviews published in magazines and newspapers will complete the subject.

Abstract
From cars to electronics, Korean design is conquering the world. This book explores Korea’s contemporary design culture between tradition and the future.
Showcasing a comprehensive collection of contemporary product and graphic design from South Korea, this book explores the country’s current design culture between tradition and the future. In Korea Power, the featured work of artists and designers offers an impressively nuanced documentation of “Korean identity” that is supplemented by insightful texts and interviews. A selection of images by the legendary Korean advertising photographer Kim Han-Yong shot in the years of reconstruction following the Korean War shows the foundation from which today’s designs are created. South Korea’s rapid rise to an economic superpower almost swept away all traces of a traditional lifestyle. Today, however, the cultural values of Korea’s past are again becoming more influential. As Korea Power shows, many Korean designers now have a new sensibility for their culture’s traditional definition of beauty that they are using to define an original, distinctly Korean elegance. This book is the official catalog for the exhibition "Korea Power. Design and Identity" at Frankfurt’s Museum Angewandte Kunst curated by Prof. Dr. Klaus Klemp and Hehn-Chu Ahn.

Abstract
Through some 300 objects this book explores contemporary Japanese design: from everyday objects and packaging to interior design and lighting elements. Ultimately the book aims to explore the way in which Japanese design manages to harness its materials--whether natural or synthetic--and at the same time combine respect for tradition with forward thinking and experimentation. The objects featured were chosen because of their strong Japanese character and the influence this ’Japaneseness’ has had on Western culture. Rather than following a chronological order or concentrating on the designers, this book focuses on the objects and is categorized by material, highlighting the strong link between design and material in Japan
Explore the enduring beauty of Japanese design through some 250 objects, ranging from bento boxes, calligraphy brushes, and Shoji sliding doors to Noguchi’s Akari lamp, the iconic Kikkoman soy sauce bootle, and a modern‐day kimono designed by Issey Miyake. Printed on craft paper and bound in the traditional Japanese style, WA features stunning, full‐page illustrations and an introduction by MUJI art director Kenya Hara.

Abstract For Kenya Hara, design begins with comprehension of the unknown. In contrast to "information," "exformation" describes how little we really know and thus becomes the starting point for any type of design. Based on a range of projects the book describes what "exformation" can look like in design practice and how this concept alters our classic understanding of information design. Following the path embarked on in Designing Design (2007) and its successor, White (2010), Ex-formation continues to explore the void, absence, and indeterminacy in contemporary design.

Abstract
Between 1935 and 1959, the architecture of childhood was at the centre of architectural discourse in a way that is unique in architectural history. Some of the seminal projects of the period, such as the Secondary Modern School at Hunstanton by Peter and Alison Smithson, Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation at Marseilles, or Aldo van Eyck’s playgrounds and orphanage, were designed for children; At CIAM, architects utilized photographs of children to present their visions for reconstruction. The unprecedented visibility of the child to architectural discourse during the period of reconstruction is the starting point for this interdisciplinary study of modern architecture under welfare state patronage. Focusing mainly on England, this book examines a series of innovative buildings and environments developed for children, such as the adventure playground, the Hertfordshire school, the reformed children hospital, Brutalist housing estates, and New Towns. It studies the methods employed by architects, child experts and policy makers to survey, assess and administer the physiological, emotional and developmental needs of the ’user’, the child. It identifies the new aesthetic and spatial order permeating the environments of childhood, based on endowing children with the agency and autonomy to create a self-regulating social order out of their own free will, while rendering their interiority and sociability observable and governable. By inserting the architectural object within a broader social and political context, The Architectures of Childhood situates post-war architecture within the welfare state’s project of governing the self, which most intensively targeted the citizen in the making, the children. Yet the emphasis on the utilization of architecture as an instrument of power does not reduce it into a mere document of social policy, as the author uncovers the surplus of meaning and richness of experience inv

Abstract
The retro-futuristic epoch is one of the most visually spectacular in architecture’s history. The utopian buildings of the 1960s and 1970s never go out of style. This book compiles radical ideas, rediscovered photos, and visionary structures.
Driven by idealistic visions, utopian architecture aimed to overcome social divisions and political strife, to put us in touch with nature, and to enable us to live humane, healthy lives. For half a century, it was both hope and inspiration. The Tale of Tomorrow surveys this diverse twentieth century phenomenon, featuring renowned works like The House of the Century or the TWA terminal, as well as lesser-known masterpieces, and profiling major thinkers such as Oscar Niemeyer, Le Corbusier, and Eero Saarinen. By digging through archives, corresponding with descendants of departed architects, and restoring photographs, the collection of utopian approaches herein maintains a visual power and infectious optimism.

Saul Steinberg : illuminations
New Haven : Yale University Press, 2006
Abstract
Best known for his barbed and brilliant art for The New Yorker, Saul Steinberg (1914–1999) did much more. He executed public murals, designed fabrics and stage sets, was an inventive collagist and printmaker, and turned his magic touch to the fields of painting, sculpture, advertising, and even wartime propaganda. This is the first comprehensive look at Steinberg’s extraordinary contribution to 20th-century art, which was that of a modern-day illuminator, putting word and image in play to create art that spoke to the eyes, and minds, of readers. An introduction by poet Charles Simic tracks the origins of Steinberg’s darkly comic sensibility in the “Balkan bazaar” of his native Romania. Joel Smith shows how architectural training and an early rise to fame as a cartoonist in Fascist-era Milan honed the artist’s gift for subtle graphic invention, and explores why one of the most visible, prolific, potent, and cosmopolitan careers in postwar American art has so thoroughly evaded serious study. Tracing the evolving motives that underlie Steinberg’s multi-layered activity, this handsome volume also raises fundamental questions about the historiography of modernism and the vexed status of “the middlebrow avant-garde” in an age of museum-bound art. Previously unseen sketches, documents, and printed matter from the artist’s papers illustrate the essay, career chronology, and entries for 120 objects featured in this important book.

Infinite Jest : caricature and satire from Leonardo to Levine

Shoot folly as it flies" : humor on paper / Constance C. McPhee with contributions by Nadine M. Orenstein -- Caricature and satire from Leonardo to Levine -- Elements of caricature -- Social satire -- Politics -- Celebrities.
Abstract
From Leonardo’s drawings of grotesque heads to contemporary prints lampooning American politicians, The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a vast but largely unknown collection of caricatures and other satirical works. This handsome book offers 165 examples, dating from about 1500 to the present, that reflect the age-old tradition of using exaggeration and humor to convey personal, social, or political meaning. The selection of images is notably broad, ranging from the elevated to the rudely humorous: renowned writers and decidedly unhygienic cooks; elegantly dressed noblemen and victims of outrageous fashion fads; Napoleon as a tidy Lilliputian and Boss Tweed as a bloated Roman emperor. Stressing the continuity of certain artistic approaches, Infinite Jest examines the development of the genre across centuries and cultures. The essential visual components of caricature are discussed and illustrated, as are recurring motifs, including exaggerated faces and bodies, people depicted as animals or objects, and processions of bizarre figures. One section is devoted to social satire (eating and drinking, gambling, fashion, several of the Seven Deadly Sins), another to various aspects of political life (British, French, Mexican, and American). Artists as diverse as Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, William Hogarth, Francisco de Goya, Thomas Rowlandson, Eugène Delacroix, Honoré Daumier, and Al Hirschfeld contribute their distinctive talents to this fascinating, informative, and very amusing volume.

"Examine Modernism’s distillation in graphic design with this vast collection of approximately 6,000 logos from 1940-1980. Ranging from media outfits to retail giant, airlines to art galleries, these clean, clear logo concepts may be seen as the visual birth of corporate identity"--Jacket.
Brand new: An unprecedented catalog of modern trademarks Modernist aesthetics in architecture, art, and product design are familiar to many. In soaring glass structures or minimalist canvases, we recognize a time of vast technological advance which affirmed the power of human beings to reshape their environment and to break, radically, from the conventions or constraints of the past. Less well-known, but no less fascinating, is the distillation of modernism in graphic design. This unprecedented TASCHEN publication, authored by Jens Müller, brings together approximately 6,000 trademarks, focused on the period 1940–1980, to examine how modernist attitudes and imperatives gave birth to corporate identity. Ranging from media outfits to retail giants, airlines to art galleries, the sweeping survey is organized into three design-orientated chapters: Geometric, Effect, and Typographic. Each chapter is then sub-divided into form and style led sections such as alphabet, overlay, dots and squares. Alongside the comprehensive catalog, the book features an introduction from Jens Müller on the history of logos, and an essay by R. Roger Remington on modernism and graphic design. Eight designer profiles and eight instructive case studies are also included, with a detailed look at the life and work of such luminaries as Paul Rand, Yusaku Kamekura, and Anton Stankowski, and at such significant projects as Fiat, The Daiei Inc., and the Mexico Olympic Games of 1968. An unrivaled resource for graphic designers, advertisers, and branding specialists, Logo Modernism is equally fascinating to anyone interested in social, cultural, and corporate history, and in the sheer persuasive power of image and form. Abstract Impossible Modernism reads the writings of German philosopher and critic Walter Benjamin (1892–1940) and Anglo-American poet and critic T. S. Eliot (1888–1965) to examine the relationship between literary and historical form during the modernist period. It focuses particularly on how they both resisted the forms of narration established by nineteenth-century academic historians and turned instead to traditional literary devices—lyric, satire, anecdote, and allegory—to reimagine the forms that historical representation might take. Tracing the fraught relationship between poetry and history back to Aristotle’s Poetics and forward to Nietzsche’s Untimely Meditations, Robert S. Lehman establishes the coordinates of the intellectual-historical problem that Eliot and Benjamin inherited and offers an analysis of how they grappled with this legacy in their major works.

Abstract
