Abstract An investigation of artists’ engagement with technical systems, tracing art historical lineages that connect works of different periods. “Machine art” is neither a movement nor a genre, but encompasses diverse ways in which artists engage with technical systems. In this book, Andreas Broeckmann examines a variety of twentieth- and early twenty-first-century artworks that articulate people’s relationships with machines. In the course of his investigation, Broeckmann traces historical lineages that connect art of different periods, looking for continuities that link works from the end of the century to developments in the 1950s and 1960s and to works by avant-garde artists in the 1910s and 1920s. An art historical perspective, he argues, might change our views of recent works that seem to be driven by new media technologies but that in fact continue a century-old artistic exploration. Broeckmann investigates critical aspects of machine aesthetics that characterized machine art until the 1960s and then turns to specific domains of artistic engagement with technology: algorithms and machine autonomy, looking in particular at the work of the Canadian artist David Rokeby; vision and image, and the advent of technical imaging; and the human body, using the work of the Australian artist Stelarc as an entry point to art that couples the machine to the body, mechanically or cybernetically. 7.036(569.4) קני קניספל, גרשון קניספל : רטרוספקטיבה 2015-1950 [ישראל] : הקיבוץ המאוחד, [2016] Abstract האלבום הרטרוספקטיבי - קניספל 2015-1950, מלווה תערוכה מקיפה של האמן במוזיאון לאמנות ישראלית, רמת גן. גרשון קניספל הוא אמן רב-אנפין, מבכירי אמני ישראל במחציתה השנייה של המאה ה-20. בין השנים 1956-1948 היה קניספל אחד האמנים הבודדים שפנו לציור תנאי חייהם וקליטתם הבעייתית של עשרות אלפי ניצולי השואה ובני עדות המזרח להם נשקפה סכנה בארצותיהם. יחד עם חמישה-שישה אמנים אחרים, ובהם מרסל ינקו, יוסף הירש, שמעון צבר ורות שלוס, ביקש קניספל לעורר את דעת הקהל - ולוּ רק באמצעות ציוריו - למצוקתם של העולים קשי היום במעברות העוני, באוהלים ובפחונים שבהם ניתן להם בקושי המינימום הדרוש לקיומם היום יומי. וכל זאת במדינת ישראל הצעירה חסרת האמצעים. באותם ימים העדיפו מרבית אמני ישראל לשאוב את השראתם מחבריהם באסכולת פריז האופנתית, שגם בה היה ליהודים חלק ניכר. תרומתם של קניספל וחבריו נזכרת בספרי ההיסטוריה ובתערוכות שנערכו בנושא זה בהמשך דרכו עזב האמן את ישראל ברצותו ללמוד מהישגיהם של אמניה הגדולים של אמריקה הלטינית בציורי פרסקו ובאמנות חוצות המקורבת לאידיאולוגיה הסוציאליסטית שלו. נזכיר כאן בעיקר את האמנים דוד אלפרו סיקיירוס המקסיקני, קנדידו פורטינרי הברזילאי והאדריכל הברזילאי אוסקר נימאייר, ממנו למד רבות ועמו שיתף פעולה עשרות שנים. בעת פרוץ ההפיכה הצבאית הברוטאלית בברזיל, שהיתה מנוגדת תכלית ניגוד לכל מה שהאמין בו, נאלץ קניספל לעזוב את ארץ הגירתו, שבה נשקפה לו סכנת חיים ופגיעה ביצירתו. במנוסתו זו הותיר אחריו עשרות יצירות אמנות על גבי חזיתות מבני ציבור, פסלי חוצות וציורי קיר בהיכלי ציבור בעריה השונות של ברזיל, אותם יצר במשך שנות שהותו שם. ביצירות אלה שברשות הרבים נחשף לראשונה כישרונו המונומנטלי שעלה בקנה אחד עם אמנותם של גדולי יוצריה של אמריקה הלטינית Per.Sub. 72 INT Inter and transdisciplinary relationships in achitecture Athens, Greece : Athens Institute for Education & Research, 2018 Abstract Selected papers from those presented at Conferences in Architecture organized by the Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER), after review and revision, are published in a series titled Architecture Anthology. To date seven volumes have been published on various topics with different editors making this volume the eighth. The series will be continued to be published to include papers presented at future ATINER Architecture Conferences. It is hoped that the series as a whole will be both of interest and of value to academics, scholars, researchers, and practitioners. The current volume is at the cutting edge of architectural theory as crossdisciplinary concepts and methodology are integrated into ideas about building design. The influence on architectural space and place of audio-visual language and processes are documented in the papers in this volume. Of great interest is how the traditional technology of the cinema, the new expertise in digital imaging, cognitive mapping, and intangible cultural values affect architecture. The work of the referees is very much appreciated for without their volunteer efforts and time expended on reviewing papers and the re-writes by authors the Architecture Anthology series would not be possible.
