Contents What is feedback? -- A feedback culture -- Teaching and learning frameworks -- The power of within-lesson verbal feedback -- Post-lesson feedback. Abstract Feedback is arguably the most critical and powerful aspect of teaching and learning. Yet, there remains a paradox: why is feedback so powerful and why is it so variable? It is this paradox which Visible Learning: Feedback aims to unravel and resolve. Combining research excellence, theory and vast teaching expertise, this book covers the principles and practicalities of feedback, including: •the variability of feedback, •the importance of surface, deep and transfer contexts, •student to teacher feedback, •peer to peer feedback, •the power of within lesson feedback and manageable post-lesson feedback. With numerous case-studies, examples and engaging anecdotes woven throughout, the authors also shed light on what creates an effective feedback culture and provide the teaching and learning structures which give the best possible framework for feedback. Visible Learning: Feedback brings together two internationally known educators and merges Hattie’s world-famous research expertise with Clarke’s vast experience of classroom practice and application, making this book an essential resource for teachers in any setting, phase or country. New York : Cooper Hewitt, [2014] Contents Foreword -- Acknowledgements -- Introduction -- Contributors -- Work -- Communicate -- Survive -- Measure -- Make -- Toolboxes -- Observe -- Appendix. Transcriptions of sketches. Abstract Tools celebrates the richness of the human imagination through a surprising range of juxtaposed and seemingly disparate objects. Accompanying an exhibition of the same name that celebrates the fall 2014 reopening of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, Tools is unprecedented in its composition of collaborators--the exhibition is Cooper Hewitt’s first pan-institutional show, spanning ten Smithsonian museums. From the earliest times to the present, tools have been at the frontier of design, demonstrating how technology and culture are inextricably linked. Consider, for example, that hand axes remained the dominant tool for 1.5 million years before any significant change was made to the human toolkit, and that the range of tools began to expand only 10,000 years ago. It is notable that the design of our basic tools--hammers, saws, screwdrivers, drills--has remained virtually unchanged for hundreds of years, indicating not only their continuity of need and function, but also the effectiveness of their design solutions. Their various incarnations and histories link us to the past. Other tools highlight new technologies and scientific breakthroughs that have opened new worlds to us. Through lush images, authoritative essays and superb design, the book shows the interconnectedness of scientists, designers, historians, anthropologists, engineers and artists through design-thinking and problem-solving, while also looking at various design perspectives and methodologies. Tools explores the world of design ideas while celebrating human ingenuity across cultures and over time. Subject Tools Tools -- Social aspects. Product design -- Social aspects. 7.036(569.4) ISR The Israeli artists book = ספר האמנות הישראלית = Le livre des artistes Israeliens Paris : La Gazette des arts, [2009]
739 DEL Delieb, Eric London : Ferndale Editions, [1968] Donated by Ella Lustig Abstract The silver box has fascinated and intrigued collectors for many centuries. It is perhaps safe to say that no other objets de vertu have attracted such vivid attention from maker and collector alike. This book is a comprehensive study of the subject which concentrates on the development of the silver box in England from the sixteenth to the late nineteenth centuries. Because the interest of collectors lies not so much in the shape or type of boxes as in the wide variety of uses to which they have been put and the splendid enrichment lavished upon them, there is a penetrating analysis of the roots and derivations of ornament. The full colour illustrations show boxes with as many diverse forms and uses as possible. The term box covers any receptacle (unless it is a vessel) whether it is a snuffbox, a pyx or a lancet case for use in phlebotomy, as long as it possesses a lid, hinged or otherwise. 75.036.7(73) CRO Crowner, Sarah Munich ; London ; New York : DelMonico Books/Prestel, [2017] Contents Foreword -- Joseph Thompson -- Chance, by design -- Suzanne Hudson -- Medium as medium : a conversation with Sarah Crowner / Bartholomew Ryan -- Beetle in the leaves / Susan Cross -- Works Abstract The artist’s first monograph, this vibrant book looks at Sarah Crowner’s playful engagement with the history of abstraction as well as her transformative appropriations of the colors, rhythms, and forms that populate our everyday lives as well as art history. Known for graphic sewn paintings―which she makes by stitching together pieces of painted and raw canvas―as well as patterned tile structures which transform architecture into painting, Crowner works in a variety of media spanning the fine and applied arts. Her work from the past decade comes alive through installation shots, studio views, and source images which have inspired her and which pay homage to many lesserknown artists, designers, and performers of the 20th century. An interview with Crowner accompanies essays discussing her practice and her exhibition at MASS MoCA. With a bold and colorful design that echoes Crowner’s sensibility, this book examines the artist’s inclusive, yet singular vision Per.Sub. 75.036(73) STI Still, Clyfford New York : Metropolitan Museum of Art : Distributed by H.N. Abrams, 1979 Donated by Ella Lustig Contents Director’s Foreword \ Philippe de Montebello -- Clyfford Still \ Katharine Kuh -- From the Artist -- Introduction -- Notes and Letters -- The Exhibition -- Catalogue of the Paintings -- Biographical Chronology -- Documentary Photographs -- Selected Bibliography -- List of Illustrations -- Index -- Photograph Credits. Abstract Clyfford Still is America’s most important, most significant, and most daring artist. This painter, pursuing a course independent of the conventional apparatus of art dealers and galleries, almost never exhibits except under museum auspices. For these reasons a Clyfford Still exhibition is a major event in the art world, and a book on Clyfford Still is a major event in the world of publishing. The present volume, which records the 1979-80 exhibition of seventy-nine Still paintings, dating from 1942 to 1978, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art--the largest exhibition of his work ever held--is the most comprehensive book on Still’s work and thus an important document of twentieth-century art. Although Still has always kept aloof from the stereotyping nomenclature of schools and movements, he has had a powerful impact on contemporary art. His monumental canvases--bold forms saturated with intense color--are of surpassing scale and power. It is easy to understand why Still prefers the extended coverage that is generally possible in a museum environment: his works are charged with a sustaining energy that relates them to one another over the almost forty years that their creation spans, and when viewed seriatim they convey a transcendent narrative quality. Each of the seventy-nine paintings in the Metropolitan Museum’s exhibition is reproduced here as a full-page or fold-out color-plate and is fully documented. Many other major works by Still are illustrated in black and white. Notes by the artist, selected letters from his files, and a biographical outline are accompanied by documentary photographs. The book contains a preface by Philippe de Montebello, director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and an enlightening introduction by the eminent art critic Katharine Kuh. Per.Sub. 77.04(43) DEH Dehnel, Sabine Ostfildern : Hatje Cantz, [2006] Donated by Ella Lustig Contents So still : der Moment, in dem die Welt verschwindet = So still : the moment when the world vanishes / Marc Peschke -- Am Anfang war das Foto = In the beginning was the photo / Bettina Hogner -- Wer spielt noch Stille Post? Ubertragungsvorgange bei Sabine Dehnel = Who still plays Chinese whispers? Sabine Dehnel’s transfer processes / Klaus Gallwitz -- Fotografische Strategien bei Sabine Dehnel = Photographic strategies and Sabine Dehnel / Luminita Sabau -- Spuren weiblicher Erinnerung = Traces of female memory / Barbara Auer Abstract In her works of painting and photography the German artist Sabine Dehnel focuses on details such as the fabric of a shirt or a hair slide in a woman’s hair. At first glance it seems rather accidental what is in the picture and what is not. However, everything turns out to be staged or manipulated. Dehnel creates an unusual interplay between painting, photography and set design in works that challenges normal ideas about media specifi city as well as our perception. Her method is always the same. She uses photographic material found in her friends’ stock of old family photos or among her own snapshots or flea markets. This material she subsequently translates into painting. Dehnel chooses a subject such as a figure in a remarkable dress and places it in a new surrounding or she borrows a spatial situation from the photograph. In this way she transforms the photography into paintings. Dehnel places real people in a setting created out of textiles, paper, wood and other materials. She creates an illusionist space normally associated with painting. The artificial effect is further emphasized by the fact that she paints her models skin with makeup so they look like figures in a painting. Per.Sub.
