<font face="Verdana"> </font> <p style="MARGIN-TOP: 0px; MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0px" align="justify"><font size="2"><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thin films of metal oxides receive much attention because of their various technological applications including solar cells, opto-electronics and optical devices owing to their various material characteristics such as high refractive indices or conducting properties. One application is interference security image structures (ISIS) for preventing counterfeiting. We currently live in an age where affordable and accessible technology makes counterfeiting relatively easy and thus frequently tempting. The rise of criminal activity and reprographic technology strongly stimulates the need for new and enhanced security features to be incorporated into financial and identity documents. An innovative approach that can be added to already popular thin film ISIS devices will be described. An example will be given of a thin film metameric filters displaying a hidden image as the angle of observation is varied. The mechanical and thermo-elastic properties of optical films, important for assuring the performance of these films, will be described. The growth, mechanical and thermo-elastic characteristics of niobium oxide, tantalum oxide, and silicon dioxide thin films prepared by dual ion beam sputtering, will be presented. Their properties were tailored by using appropriate ion beam energy and currents.
