BIOART

BIOART - Innovative Multidisciplinary Curriculum in Artificial Implants for Bio-Engineering BSc/MSc Degrees. BIOART is a Capacity Building project, funded by the ERASMUS+ program of the European Union. The project builds up the international capabilities in the curriculum of Bio-Engineering studies in the higher education. The project's goal is to develop a multidisciplinary program in Bioengineering, with the emphasis on smart artificial implants. The project brings together various European partners with the biomedical engineering expertise in fields of biocompatible materials, biomedical signal processing and others.

A consortium, consisting of a 13 of academic institutions from Spain, Belgium, Poland, Austria, Ukraine and Israel (amongst them HIT, Bar Ilan University, Shamoon College of Engineering and IUCC – the Inter-University Computation Center) was created  and an application submitted in 2017 was granted a budget of almost €1M for three years.

Prof. David Luengo from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) is BIOART's coordinator. HIT's Faculty of Engineering team are: Prof. Yosef Ben Ezra, Dean; Dr. Amos Bardea, local coordinator; Dr. Ronen Sosnik and Dr. Dror Lederman. RIIVA (the Research, Innovation and International Ventures Authority) is providing organizational and administrative support to the project with the assistance of Bracha Einhoren.

Our team is developing three courses for the BIOART curriculum*:

  1. Deep learning and its applications in Bioengineering
The purpose of the course is to present in depth the deep learning methodology and to enable students to gain practical experience in one of the fascinating areas of biomedical engineering.
  2. Introduction to Neural Implants
The course presents the student with the fundamentals of Neurobiology models and serves as a key for understanding the basics in neural implants.
  3. Neural Implants – Applications
The course presents the student with the implementation of neural recording and stimulating techniques and the planning and production of peripheral and central nervous system implants including auditory and motor Neuroprostheses.

* Additional courses and material will be developed by the other partners and will be available to be shared by members of the consortium.

An Artificial Intelligence (AI) Laboratory has been established by a BIOART grant, in addition to other equipment purchase with this budget. The goal of the Lab is to be a tool for teaching and providing students with practical experience in areas of Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Big Data analytics and Data Science with a strong emphasis on real-life industrial challenges.
