"Nuclear Energy and Effects of Ionizing Radiation" by Dr. Luis Lederman

 

Dr. Luis Lederman - consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, delivered a special lecture today entitled: "Nuclear Energy and Effects of Ionizing Radiation".

The lecture was an introduction to an entire course under the same topic that will be held at HIT by both Dr. Lederman and Dr. Joyce Lipsztein, consultant to the USA Advisory Board on Radiation and Worker Health, NIOSH/CDC, USA.

It presented an overview of the status of nuclear power worldwide and the fundamental principles of nuclear safety.

 

The basic safety functions of nuclear reactors and the reasons that they are necessary will be described. Defense-in-depth, the key concept of nuclear safety, and how it is implemented in reactor design will be explained.

 

At the end of 2017, there were 448 nuclear power reactors in operation in 30 countries, generating some 11% of the electric energy worldwide. Additionally, 59 reactors were under construction. The lecture will review the situation in countries with established nuclear power programs and the emerging interest of new countries and their plans to utilize nuclear power for electricity generation.

The course will include other topics such as: INTRODUCTION TO NUCLEAR ENERGY; NUCLEAR SAFETY PRINCIPLES AND APPLICATIONS; INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR INSTRUMENTS; BIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF RADIOLOGICAL PROTECTION; QUANTITIES USED IN RADIOLOGICAL PROTECTION; THE SYSTEM OF RADIOLOGICAL PROTECTION.
