Platelet : role in haemostasis, thrombosis, inflammation and atherosclerosis

Platelet (Thrombocyte) is a key element in development of vascular diseases, such as myocardial infarction and stroke. Platelet activation triggers signal transduction, release of active products, adhesion to vessel wall, and thrombus formation. Platelet interaction with other blood cells is central in linking haemostatic, inflammatory, and immune processes in atherosclerosis. In this lecture, two approaches for assessment of platelet function are presented including an Impact technology developed in Sheba Medical Center. A possibility of mathematical modeling of some of important platelet functions is discussed.
