SCIENCE\TECHNOLOGY\DESIGN

Head of Group: Dr. Dror K. Levi

The research team aims to forward and deepen the discussion between science, technology and design. The interaction will focus on the overlapping areas among the respective territories of inquiry, in order to open a new perspective over the major challenges that define the complex global systems of today.

The framework of science/technology/design will be a platform for building a kind of cognitive algorithm, which will open new vistas for inventive theoretical and practical activities. It will be initially examined through biomimicry, a field of thought and methodology that is rapidly growing and gaining recognition across many disciplines.

Biomimicry, also known as biomimetics or biologically inspired designs, involves finding solutions to design problems by emulating the natural world. This is done through the imitation of nature‘s forms, processes and ecosystems to find effective and sustainable solution to design and technological problems.

In correlation with the advancing research, recently there is a growing interest in biologically inspired techniques as well as a means of expression and as an area of experimental study of new artistic systems. Application of these techniques can be found in: visual art and sound synthesis, analysis and interpretation; video and poetry among others.

In spite of the accumulation of knowledge and experience in this re-invented discipline of Biomimetics, a clear theoretical and applicative framework of reference is yet in the process of being synthesized as part of a multidisciplinary effort.

ארכיטקטורה בהשראת הטבעThe research group calls for cooperative and collaborative thinking between researchers from various fields to extend their disciplinary boundaries and share their knowledge and experience in areas such as: Bionic engineering; sustainable design; bio-inspired materials and structures; energy wise systems; robotics; motion systems and artificial intelligence; sensors and signal processing; medicine (prosthetics and orthotics);  architecture & built environment; agriculture and permaculture;  textiles (medical/technical/fashion);
