Abstract

Abstract ‫

Introduction to Trefftz finite element method -- Foundation of MATLAB programming -- C programming -- Commonly used subroutines -- Potential problems -- Plane stress/strain problems -- Treatment of inhomogeneous terms using RBF approximation -- Special purpose T-elements -- Advanced topics for further programming development.
Abstract
Although the Trefftz finite element method (FEM) has become a powerful computational tool in the analysis of plane elasticity, thin and thick plate bending, Poisson’s equation, heat conduction, and piezoelectric materials, there are few books that offer a comprehensive computer programming treatment of the subject. Collecting results scattered in the literature, MATLAB® and C Programming for Trefftz Finite Element Methods provides the detailed MATLAB® and C programming processes in applications of the Trefftz FEM to potential and elastic problems. The book begins with an introduction to the hybrid-Trefftz (HT) FEM that covers basic concepts and general element formulations of the method. It then concentrates on both the essentials and subroutines of MATLAB and C programming. The next few chapters present applications of T-elements to potential problems and linear plane elasticity, discuss how to solve body force in elasticity through radial basis functions, and examine how special purpose functions can be constructed. The final chapter explores advanced topics, such as the construction of Trefftz p-elements, dimensionless transformation, and an alternative formulation to HT FEM. Unifying the computer programming aspects of the Trefftz FEM, this book will stimulate the development and application of this novel method in many facets of practical engineering.

Abstract
"Hilbert Transform Applications in Mechanical Vibration addresses recent advances in research and applications of the modern Hilbert transform to vibration engineering, through which laboratory dynamic tests can be produced more quickly and accurately. The author integrates important pioneering developments in signal processing and mathematical models with typical properties of mechanical constructions such as resonance, dynamic stiffness and damping. This unique merger of technical properties and digital signal processing allows the instant solution of a variety of engineering problems and in-depth exploration of the physics of vibration by analysis, identification and simulation. Hilbert Transform Applications in Mechanical Vibration employs the author’s pioneering applications of the Hilbert Vibration Decomposition method characterized by high frequency resolution, and provides a comprehensive account of the main applications, covering dynamic testing and extraction of the modal parameters of nonlinear vibration systems including the initial elastic and damping force characteristics."-- Provided by publisher

What kind leaders do -- Who kind leaders are -- Expectations matter -- Truth matters -- Growth matters -- Preparing the next generation of leaders.
Abstract
By now, many leaders have realised that when it comes to business, nice guys often finish first. Old fashioned images of corporate callousness and greed have been replaced by a gentler, more human conception of great leadership. But how does one define ’kindness’ in the context of business? And what is the best way to ’use’ this deceptively simple notion as a guiding principle to lead an organisation successfully into the future? "Leading with Kindness" identifies the attributes successful ’kind’ leaders share, showing readers how they can use kindness. Far from presenting a naive idea of kindness consisting of the simple give and take of benefits for supposed loyalty, this realistic book shows leaders how they can use sincerity, honesty, and concern to get the most from their people.
"Leading with Kindness identifies six ingredients of kindness - compassion, integrity, gratitude, authenticity, humility, and humor - none of which might readily spring to mind when envisioning the archetypal business leader. But they are absolutely essential to powerful leadership. The book also points out obstacles to each of the six qualities, and (crucially) offers real-world, everyday management and leadership approaches that build and demonstrate each one."--Jacket.

The discovery of white -- Paper -- Emptiness -- Back to white.
Abstract
"White" is not a book about colors. It is rather Kenya Haras attempt to explore the essence of "White", which he sees as being closely related to the origin of Japanese aesthetics - symbolizing simplicity and subtlety. The central concepts discussed by Kenya Hara in this publication are emptiness and the absolute void. Kenya Hara also sees his work as a designer as a form of communication. Good communication has the distinction of being able to listen to each other, rather than to press one’s opinion onto the opponent. Kenya Hara compares this form of communication with an "empty container". In visual communication, there are equally signals whose signification is limited, as well as signals or symbols such as the cross or the red circle on the Japanese flag, which - like an "empty container" - permit every signification and do not limit imagination. Not alone the fact that the Japanese character for white forms a radical of the character for emptiness has prompted him the closely associate the color white with emptiness.

Abstract
A compelling defense for the importance of design and how it shapes our behavior, our emotions, and our lives Design has always prided itself on being relevant to the world it serves, but interest in design was once limited to a small community of design professionals. Today, books on “design thinking” are best sellers, and computer and Web-based tools have expanded the definition of who practices design. Looking at objects, letterforms, experiences, and even theatrical performances, award-winning author Jessica Helfand asserts that understanding design’s purpose is more crucial than ever. Design is meaningful not because it is pretty but because it is an intrinsically humanist discipline, tethered to the very core of why we exist. For example, as designers collaborate with developing nations on everything from more affordable lawn mowers to cleaner drinking water, they must take into consideration the full range of a given community’s complex social needs. Advancing a conversation that is unfolding around the globe, Helfand offers an eye-opening look at how designed things make us feel as well as how—and why—they motivate our behavior.

Advancing a conversation that is unfolding around the globe, Helfand offers an eye-opening look at how designed things make us feel as well as how--and why--they motivate our behavior." -- Publisher’s description

Kid size : the material world of childhood.
Milan : Skira, [Weil am Rhein] : Vitra Design Museum, 1997
Abstract
A child may regard toys and furniture as largely interchangeable objects in the serious work of play, but in this fascinating new study of their design history, these everyday objects are revealed as vehicles for society’s attitudes towards learning.Essays to accompany the many and varied photographs have been written by leading childhood specialists, social historians, ethnologists, educationalists, and industrial designers: Lucy Bullivant, Mike Scaife, Linda Pollock, Eileen Adams, Gunter Beltzig, Ingeborg Weber-Kellermann, Gerhard Kubik, Tina Wodiung and Sally Kevill-Davies. This unique volume, published to accompany a touring exhibition organized by the Vitra Design Museum in Switzerland, will prove to be of great interest to both design historians and educationalists.

Abstract
Critical architectural theory has, over the past decade and a half, undergone significant transformation. The urgency of the 1990s propractice movement, with its mandate to focus on the realities of building, has shifted architectural theory away from utopian ideals and heavy-handed cultural critiques toward the realities of architecture and building. This transition renders theory’s immediate history particularly relevant to contemporary thought and practice. Constructing a New Agenda offers an overview of the myriad approaches and attitudes adopted by architects and architectural theorists during this era. In this long-awaited follow-up to our critically acclaimed and best-selling anthology Theorizing a New Agenda, editor A. Krista Sykes collects twenty-eight essays that address architectural theory from the mid-1990s, where the first volume left off, through the present. Multiple themes—including the impact of digital technologies on processes of architectural design, production, materiality, and representation; the implications of globalization and networks of information; the growing emphasis on sustainable and green architecture; and the phenomenon of the "starchitect" and iconic architecture—overlap to address the contemporary situation as a whole. By providing, in one place, the keytheoretical texts of the past fifteen years, Constructing a New Agenda becomes a foundation for ongoing discussions surrounding contemporary architectural thought and practice. Contributions by distinguished thinkers and makers such as Stan Allen, Deborah Berke, Michael Braungart, Rem Koolhaas, Sanford Kwinter, Greg Lynn, Reinhold Martin, William McDonough, William Mitchell, Samuel Mockbee, Glenn Murcutt, Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto, Michael Speaks and Anthony Vidler are preceded by brief introductions that establish each essay’s particular historical context and significance. Abstract
There’s only one Wedgwood, but there are limitless expressions of Wedgwood style. At Home with Wedgwood showcases 250 years of the company’s innovations–in all its manifestations–and the imaginative ways today’s collectors draw inspiration from the past and integrate Wedgwood pieces into their lives. Whether gracing a table for Saturday breakfast, bringing whimsy to a garden party, or arranged for a formal affair, Wedgwood is classically beautiful yet contemporarily stylish. Quite simply, Wedgwood is as much at home on the everyday table as it is when carefully styled for special occasions. At the heart of At Home with Wedgwood are the homes of a group of renowned collectors, beautifully photographed to reveal how this diverse and dynamic group of people live and entertain with Wedgwood. From Carolyne Roehm’s movable feast to Charlotte Moss’s after-the-ballet supper, from the vintage collection that fills Thomas O’Brien’s country house to Jasper Conran’s English style, and from Vera Wang’s elegant bridal shower to Martha Stewart’s perfect setting, you will see how today’s style makers draw on their Wedgwood for every occasion.
At Home with Wedgwood also includes a stunning visual gallery of patterns–from classic favorites to popular new motifs–and a portrait of Josiah Wedgwood, the company’s inspirational founder whose values still inform Wedgwood today. Finally, a resource section makes this both a sumptuous book of style and a practical guide to the world’s best-known maker of tableware.

Abstract
In 1941, a young Romanian escaped wartime Italy, where he had recently completed a degree in architecture, and began submitting cartoons to a weekly Manhattan magazine. For the next six decades, Saul Steinberg’s covers, cartoons, features, and illustrations would be a defining presence at The New Yorker. As the magazine became a standard-bearer of taste and intelligence in American letters, Steinberg’s drawings emerged as its visual epitome, and the artist gained recognition as one of the great originals of his epoch.
This richly illustrated volume opens with a captivating introduction by the artist’s friend and colleague Ian Frazier. Joel Smith’s essay, the first to draw on unpublished material in Steinberg’s papers, explores the remarkable range and unceasing evolution of a major American modernist - one whose art reached a grateful public not from museum walls but from the pages of the periodical he called "my refuge, patria, and safety net." All eighty-nine of Steinberg’s New Yorker covers appear in full color, as do many drawings that were printed inside the magazine when art was reproduced there only in black-and-white. Steinberg at The New Yorker assembles the artist’s most beloved, intuitive, and brilliant inspirations. Wartime portfolios chronicle his tours of duty in China, India, North Africa, and Italy; in peacetime, the artist pays indelible visits to Hollywood, Moscow, Berlin, and Samarkand. He populates New York with stoical cats, precocious children, puzzled couples, and a menagerie of vivid grotesques. Thinkers grapple with demons of their own making; speakers speak past one another in the graphic dialects of street map and scribble. Words go on the warpath, numbers guard their secrets, and question marks an.

Georgian style and design for contemporary living / [Second edition]
London : Cico Books, 2012
Abstract
Henrietta Spencer-Churchill, noted authority on using traditional style in contemporary settings, examines how the Georgian era is inspiring today’s interiors. Associated by most Americans with Colonial Williamsburg or Jefferson’s Monticello, the Georgian style confers a sense of comfortable luxury that makes any home a haven, as well as a showcase. Proceeding room by room, she examines how updated Georgian style relates to contemporary living. In addition to the staple interior spaces such as living room, kitchen, and bedroom, the book uncovers new applications of Georgian style in such contemporary "must-haves" like home offices, media rooms, fitness rooms, and the transformation of the bath into the home spa. Each chapter is illustrated with photographs that demonstrate the meaning of pleasing proportions and good layouts, complete with detail shots of fabric swatches, color samples, and drawings from the author’s design portfolio. A key feature is the focus on design flow to bring consistency to the entire home, and how to juggle spaces for the less formal, family-friendly orientation that is the hallmark of contemporary living. Applying classic design principles to indoor/outdoor lifestyles and eco-friendly living is also discussed.

Abstract
Advertised as the Billion-Dollar Fair, the 19641965 New York Worlds Fair transformed a sleepy park in the borough of Queens into a fantasy world enjoyed by more than 51 million visitors from around the world. While many countries and states exhibited at the fair, the most memorable pavilions were built by the giants of American industry. Their exhibits took guests backward and forward in time, all the while extolling how marvelous everyday life would be through the use of their products. Many of the techniques used in these shows set the standard for future fairs and theme parks, and the pavilions that housed them remain the most elaborate structures ever built for an American fair. The 19641965 New York Worlds Fair showcases the beauty of this international spectacular through rare color photographs, published here for the first time.

Abstract
After enduring 10 harrowing years of the Great Depression, visitors to the 1939–1940 New York World’s Fair found welcome relief in the fair’s optimistic presentation of the “World of Tomorrow.” Pavilions from America’s largest corporations and dozens of countries were spread across a 1,216-acre site, showcasing the latest industrial marvels and predictions for the future intermingled with cultural displays from around the world. Well known for its theme structures, the Trylon and Perisphere, the fair was an intriguing mixture of technology, science, architecture, showmanship, and politics. Proclaimed by many as the most memorable world’s fair ever held, it predicted wonderful times were ahead for the world even as the clouds of war were gathering. Through vintage photographs, most never published before, The 1939–1940 New York World’s Fair recaptures those days when the eyes of the world were on New York and on the future.

Spencer-Churchill, Henrietta
London : Collins & Brown, 2001
Abstract
Classic English interiors is a sumptuous showcase for a distinctive style that is now as popular in Manhattan as in the country houses of England. Written by The Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill, the book is divided into two parts. The first half reveals the private and the public side of Blenheim Palace, her ancestral home, explores the country houses of Oxfordshire from which Lady Henrietta drew much of her inspiration and features selections from Woodstock Designs portfolio. Her fascinating text reveals life behind the scenes in some of Britain’s most beautiful country houses. Hundreds of specially commissioned photographs show she translated the confident sweep of classic English style to produce homes of great elegance; comfortable family spaces; fresh, simple schemes and smart, stylish ones.

Elsie de Wolfe’s Paris : frivolity before the storm
New York : Abrams, 2014
Abstract
The American decorator Elsie de Wolfe (1858–1950) was the international set’s preeminent hostess in Paris during the interwar years. She had a legendary villa in Versailles, where in the late 1930s she held two fabulous parties—her Circus Balls—that marked the end of the social scene that her friend Cole Porter perfectly captured in his songs, as the clouds of war swept through Europe. Charlie Scheips tells the story of these glamorous parties using a wealth of previously unpublished photographs and introducing a large cast of aristocrats, beauties, politicians, fashion designers, movie stars, moguls, artists, caterers, florists, party planners, and decorators. A landmark work of social history and a poignant vision of a vanished world, Scheips’s book belongs on the shelf with Abrams’ classics such as Slim Aarons: Once Upon A Time and Tony Duquette.

Abstract
The first significant publication on Clyfford Still and his work in more than twenty-five years celebrates one of abstract expressionism’s founders. Best known for his compelling abstract works with jagged fields and powerful expanses of color, Clyfford Still (1904–1980) stands among the giants of post–World War II art. Together with Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Franz Kline, and Barnett Newman, Still helped shape abstract expressionism. This vividly illustrated book presents more than one hundred of Still’s greatest works and is the first comprehensive catalogue of the new Clyfford Still Museum in Denver. The book offers intimate reflections written by his daughters Sandra Still Campbell and Diane Still Knox; Dean Sobel chronicles the origins of the new museum; and David Anfam, one of the world’s foremost authorities on Still’s work, gives a new scholarly and critical perspective of Still, made possible by the opening of the museum. Illustrations include monumental paintings, works on paper, and Still’s only sculptures, many of which have never been published or publicly exhibited.

Abstract
"With more than 250 artists and some 1,400 images, this ambitious catalogue and exhibition survey the vibrant landscape of graphic designers who have seized the means of production and are rewriting the nature of contemporary design practice. Charting a rich vein of activity that cuts across wildly diverse fields, Graphic Design: Now in Production chronicles the postmillennial scene of all-access design tools and self-publishing systems, the open-source nature of creative production, and the entrepreneurial spirit of the designer turned producer. Part operating manual, part academic reader, and part sourcebook, the catalogue features writings by some of the field’s major thinkers, including Åbäke, Ian Albinson, Peter Bil’ak, Andrew Blauvelt, Rob Giampietro, James Goggin, Peter Hall, Steven Heller, Jeremy Leslie, Ellen Lupton, Ben Radatz, Michael Rock, Dmitri Siegel, Daniel van der Velden, Armin Vit and Bryony Gomez-Palacio, and Lorraine Wild. Freely mixing writing styles, from personal rants to the collective speak of Wikipedia, the book touches upon hundreds of topics. Picking up where the design authorship debates of the 1990s left off, this catalogue examines the evolution of graphic design in an expanded field of practice. It considers myriad issues, such as the changing nature of reading and writing, self-publishing and clientless design, the persistence of the poster and the book in a screen-based culture, the designer’s voice in the age of crowdsourcing, the visualization of journalism, the ubiquity of branding, and the democratization of design tools and software. Sprinkled throughout are numerous bits--factoids, explanations, and tangents--exploring everything from fake Apple Stores to Adobe DPS, Ghanaian coffins to cultural analytics, Scriptographer to heraldry."--Publisher’s website.

Abstract
This is a monograph, manual and manifesto by one of the world’s leading graphic designers. Protégé of design legend Massimo Vignelli and partner in the New York office of the international design firm Pentagram, Michael Bierut has had one of the most varied careers of any living graphic designer. The 35 projects Bierut presents in this book illustrate the breadth of activity that graphic design encompasses today, his goal being to demonstrate not a single ideology, but the enthusiastically eclectic approach that has been a hallmark of his career. Each project is told in Bierut’s own entertaining voice and shown through historic images, preliminary drawings (including full-size reproductions of the notebooks he has maintained for over 30 years), working models and rejected alternatives, as well as the finished work. Along the way, he provides insights into the creative process, his working life, his relationship with clients, and the struggles that any design professional faces in bringing innovative ideas to the world. Inspiring, informative and authoritative, How to...is set to be the bible of graphic design ideas.
How to, Bierut’s first career retrospective, is a landmark work in the field. Featuring more than thirty-five of his projects, it reveals his philosophy of graphic design—how to use it to sell things, explain things, make things look better, make people laugh, make people cry, and (every once in a while) change the world. Specially chosen to illustrate the breadth and reach of graphic design today, each entry demonstrates Bierut’s eclectic approach. In his entertaining voice, the artist walks us through each from start to finish, mixing historic images, preliminary drawings (including full-size reproductions of the notebooks he has maintained for more than thirty-five years), working models and rejected alternatives, as well as the finished work. Throughout, he provides insights into the creative process, his working life, his relationship with clients, and the struggles that any design professional faces in bringing innovative ideas to the world. Offering insight and inspiration for artists, designers, students, and anyone interested in how words, images, and ideas can be put together, How to provides insight to the design process of one of this century’s most renowned creative minds.

Crane, Walter 1845-1915. author
The art & illustration of Walter Crane
Mineola, New York : Dover Publications, Inc., 2010
Abstract
This original collection of more than 100 innovative images commemorates the artistry of a prominent figure in the Golden Age of Illustration. Crane was one of the earliest children’s book artists that experiemented with colors, and this volume not only surveys his best paintings, it constitutes a visual history of genre’s first color illustrations.
A prominent figure in the Victorian art world, Walter Crane not only participated in the late nineteenth century’s publishing revolution but also led the way toward the Golden Age of Illustration. Crane was instrumental in the transition from simple black-and-white illustrations for children’s books to gallery-quality artwork. This original collection features more than one hundred of the influential artist’s brilliant images. It constitutes a survey of his paintings as well as a visual history of the development of the first color illustrations. Few artists of Crane’s generation achieved careers as varied and successful as his. This compilation reflects the diversity of his subjects, from images for alphabet books, nursery rhymes, and fairy tales to scenes from stories of King Arthur and Robin Hood to illustrations inspired by the classics of Shakespeare, Hawthorne, and Spenser. Editor Jeff A. Menges provides an Introduction that places the artist and his works in historic context.

The case for wit -- Types of wit -- Wit in practice -- Wit in the world -- How I got the idea.
Abstract
Forty years of "witty thinking" from over 500 designers, including hundreds of visual examples and interviews with the world’s top practitioners First published in 1996, A Smile in the Mind rapidly became one of the most influential books in graphic design – a rich sourcebook of design ideas and an entertaining guide to the techniques behind witty thinking. Now extensively revised and updated, this book explores the powerful role of wit in graphic design, making the case for wit, as the magical element that builds the world’s biggest brands and engages people with messages that matter. Packed with illustrations showcasing the use of wit by today’s practitioners alongside classic examples, A Smile in the Mind brings together the best projects from around the world and across the decades. The different routes designers can take are examined and illustrated with inspirational examples, exploring wit by technique (such as ambiguity, substitution and double takes), application (including posters, packaging and data visualization) and business area, spanning digital, retail, arts and culture, politics and even matters of life and death.
The book also features interviews with legendary designers past and present, answering the biggest question of all: how did they get the idea? Designers offer a glimpse into their private working methods and thought processes, and reveal the inspiration behind classic pieces of work. Showcasing forty years of witty thinking and including over 1,000 projects and 500 designers and creative thinkers, A Smile in the Mind is an essential compendium of contemporary designs and a celebration of classic pieces, resulting in the definitive guide to wit in graphic design. Written with humour and insight, it offers designers a friendly read, a helpful sourcebook and a trigger for ideas.
