Abstract

This book brings into focus the synergistic interaction between analysis and geometry by examining a variety of topics in function theory, real analysis, harmonic analysis, several complex variables, and group actions. Krantz’s approach is motivated by examples, both classical and modern, which highlight the symbiotic relationship between analysis and geometry. Creating a synthesis among a host of different topics, this book is useful to researchers in geometry and analysis and may be of interest to physicists, astronomers, and engineers in certain areas. The book is based on lectures presented at an NSF-CBMS Regional Conference held in May 1992.

Complex dynamics

New York : Springer, 1993.

 Abstract

A discussion of the properties of conformal mappings in the complex plane, closely related to the study of fractals and chaos. Indeed, the book ends in a detailed study of the famous Mandelbrot set, which describes very general properties of such mappings. Focusing on the analytic side of this contemporary subject, the text was developed from a course taught over several semesters and aims to help students and instructors to familiarize themselves with complex dynamics. Topics covered include: conformal and quasi-conformal mappings, fixed points and conjugations, basic rational iteration, classification of periodic components, critical points and expanding maps, some applications of conformal mappings, the local geometry of the Fatou set, and quadratic polynomials and the Mandelbrot set.

Abstract

The study of composition operators links some of the most basic questions you can ask about linear operators with beautiful classical results from analytic-function theory. The process invests old theorems with new mean ings, and bestows upon functional analysis an intriguing class of concrete linear operators. Best of all, the subject can be appreciated by anyone with an interest in function theory or functional analysis, and a background roughly equivalent to the following twelve chapters of Rudin’s textbook Real and Complex Analysis [Rdn ’87]: Chapters 1-7 (measure and integra tion, LP spaces, basic Hilbert and Banach space theory), and 10-14 (basic function theory through the Riemann Mapping Theorem). In this book I introduce the reader to both the theory of composition operators, and the classical results that form its infrastructure. I develop the subject in a way that emphasizes its geometric content, staying as much as possible within the prerequisites set out in the twelve fundamental chapters of Rudin’s book. Although much of the material on operators is quite recent, this book is not intended to be an exhaustive survey. It is, quite simply, an invitation to join in the fun. The story goes something like this.

Abstract

Historically, complex analysis and geometrical function theory have been inten sively developed from the beginning of the twentieth century. They provide the foundations for broad areas of mathematics. In the last fifty years the theory of holomorphic mappings on complex spaces has been studied by many mathemati cians with many applications to nonlinear analysis, functional analysis, differential equations, classical and quantum mechanics. The laws of dynamics are usually presented as equations of motion which are written in the abstract form of a dy namical system: dx / dt + f ( x) = 0, where x is a variable describing the state of the system under study, and f is a vector function of x. The study of such systems when f is a monotone or an accretive (generally nonlinear) operator on the under lying space has been recently the subject of much research by analysts working on quite a variety of interesting topics, including boundary value problems, integral equations and evolution problems (see, for example, [19, 13] and [29]). In a parallel development (and even earlier) the generation theory of one parameter semigroups of holomorphic mappings in en has been the topic of interest in the theory of Markov stochastic processes and, in particular, in the theory of branching processes (see, for example, [63, 127, 48] and [69]).

Abstract

How do we define ’taste’? The only certainty is that it shifts and changes - sometimes abruptly. With the explosion of vulgar consumerism in the mid-19th century, the Victorians seized upon the notion of ’good taste’ as a way of codifying middle-class mores. A century later, to talk about taste had become almost taboo, since judgments made about dress, manners, food and art can often be painfully revealing. And today? When this classic text was first published in 1991, Stephen Bayley illuminated the nuances and niceties of our mercurial understanding of taste. In this new edition, he ranges far and wide to bring us exquisitely up to date.

Abstract

Architect and architecture theorist Robert van ’t Hoff (1887-1979) made a highly idiosyncratic contribution to Dutch architecture of the twentieth century. Van ’t Hoff was associated with De Stijl, one of the most important innovative forces in Dutch art and architecture of the early twentieth century. His buildings, writings and, for example, his financial support of De Stijl meant he was a pivotal member of the Dutch avant-garde. Van ’t Hoff was fairly extreme in his views about the role of the architect. For instance, as the projects architect, he personally stood on the scaffolding during the construction of his renowned Villa Henny, a "white-collar worker" shoulder to shoulder with the "manual workers", in order to realize the new society with its greater social equality and well-being in combination with less private ownership. Besides designing for a new society he drew the logical conclusions of such ideologies for how he pursued his own life. Van ’t Hoff won international fame for the Villa Henny (1915-1919).

Abstract

Durable, honest, and handsome, Heath ceramics are design icons. Much collected, these signature tableware and tiles are still made according to the artisanal tradition that Edith Heath conceived in the mid-1940s, when she founded the companyit is one of the few remaining mid-century American potteriesin Sausalito, California. Now the remarkable history, legacy, and craft of these ceramics, as well as the story of the woman who created them, are told for the first time in word and hundreds of archival and newly commissioned images. Heath’s work has been an inspiration to numerous luminaries in diverse fields. Among those contributing their insights to the book are dwr.com founder Rob Forbes, restaurateur Alice Waters, design maven Agnes Bourne, and many more. Heath Ceramics is the celebration of this classic pottery that is still part of today’s design scene.

Abstract

"Typography exists everywhere, even in the unlikely forms created by a dancer’s body in the Czech font Abeceda. With 100 new pages and a revamped introduction and texts by art writer Mel Gooding, A2Z+ expands and improves upon A2Z, the classic compendium of type. Inside, curving lines of words make up the body of a rooster, eye-charts assert their avant-garde merit, and stamped figures appear on USSR political propaganda in bold primary colors. Culled from classic modernist books, design handbooks, and signwriter manuals, this collection is the perfect inspiration for designers, history buffs, and casual readers, and it remains the ultimate source for inventive fonts not found anywhere else"-- Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Mary and Russel Wright’s guide to easier living

Salt Lake City : Gibbs Smith, Publisher, 2003.

 Abstract

Time is a valued commodity in our modern world, and everyone struggles to make the most of each minute. Russel and Mary Wright recognized decades ago that finding time to organize their lives and homes would become a priority for modern men and women. In their groundbreaking book, Guide to Easier Living, the Wrights offered simple ways to achieve a comfortable, well-designed, and organized living environment in any home for any family. Originally published in 1950, Gibbs Smith is proud to rerelease Guide to Easier Living, and to reintroduce the Wrights’ time-tested and proven methods for maintaining an inviting and efficient home. From ways to make household chores as fast and painless as possible, to how to organize a room for maximum living space, the Wrights pioneered a new informal way of living for a newly suburban American public. The Wrights’ ideas revolutionized American living and the way everyday people dealt with the unending job of keeping a home in order. These methods and ideas are just as relevant-if not more so-today as they were a half-century ago. Russel and Mary Wright were prominent and successful designers who pioneered the fusion of modern design and informal living. Most importantly, they were known for their tabletop designs. The Wrights’ most famous tabletop design, American Modern, was the best-selling dinnerware in American history and has just been rereleased by Oneida Ltd.

Hollis, Richard

Richard Hollis designs for the Whitechapel : a graphic designer and an art gallery at work in twentieth-century London

London : Hyphen Press, 2017.

 Abstract

Richard Hollis has been called "the graphic designer’s designer." Best known as the author of the classic Graphic Design: A Concise History (1994), it is his six decades of design work that is currently undergoing a long overdue critical reevaluation. In Richard Hollis Designs for the Whitechapel, author Christopher Wilson focuses on the visual identity Hollis developed during the 1970s and 80s for London’s then up-and-coming Whitechapel Art Gallery. Working closely with curators and artists, Hollis designed a series of conceptually rigorous posters, brochures, and catalogs for pioneering exhibitions by artists such as Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, Joseph Cornell, Philip Guston, and Frida Kahlo. This timely collection presents all of Hollis’s masterpieces of understatement, along with critical essays and interviews.

This moose belongs to me

London : HarperCollins Children’s, 2013.

Abstract

Wilfred is a boy with rules. He lives a very orderly life. It’s fortunate, then, that he has a pet who abides by rules, such as not making noise while Wilfred educates him on his record collection. There is, however, one rule that Wilfred’s pet has difficulty following: Going whichever way Wilfred wants to go. Perhaps this is because Wilfred’s pet doesn’t quite realize that he belongs to anyone. A moose can be obstinate in such ways. Fortunately, the two manage to work out a compromise. Let’s just say it involves apples. Oliver Jeffers, the bestselling creator of Stuck and The Incredible Book Eating Boy, delivers another deceptively simple book sure to make kids giggle.

Sahre, Paul

Two-dimensional man : a graphic memoir

New York : Abrams Press, 2017.

 Abstract

In Two-Dimensional Man, Paul Sahre shares deeply revealing stories that serve as the unlikely inspiration behind his extraordinary thirty-year design career. Sahre explores his mostly vain attempts to escape his "suburban Addams Family" upbringing and the death of his elephant-trainer brother. He also wrestles with the cosmic implications involved in operating a scanner, explains the disappearance of ice machines, analyzes a disastrous meeting with Steely Dan, and laments the typos, sunsets, and poor color choices that have shaped his work and point of view. Two-Dimensional Man portrays the designer’s life as one of constant questioning, inventing, failing, dreaming, and ultimately making.

California captured : mid-century modern architecture : Marvin Rand

London : Phaidon Press, 2018.

 Abstract

Los Angeles photographer Marvin Rand created iconic images of some of the most celebrated architectural creations of his time, photographing buildings by the likes of Modernist masters Craig Ellwood, Louis Kahn, and Frank Lloyd Wright to capture the essence of their work - and, in doing so, played a critical role in shaping the Mid-Century California style now worshiped the world over. The discovery of Rand’s archive has brought a treasure trove to life, and California Captured showcases it - and the period - as never before.

People of the twenty-first century

London : Phaidon Press, 2014.

 Abstract

"An enormous and completely fascinating collection of ’anti-sartorial’ photographs of street life by the Dutch conceptual artist/street photographer. From Amsterdam to New York and Paris to Shanghai, these photographs, taken over a period of more than twenty years, provide a cumulative portrait of the people of the twenty-first century. Over the course of the last two decades, the Dutch photographer worked methodically on his monumental Photo Notes project. First he would select a busy pedestrian area, his favourite spots were often near shopping centres, where he would stay for 30 minutes up to a few hours. He then spent time observing passers-by before recognizing a common type, normally based on a garment, sometimes a behaviour: people in band T-shirts, fur caps or beige trench coats; young couples walking arm-in-arm; women in suit dresses; men with gelled hair or pushing shopping trolleys. He snapped them with a camera hung around his neck, attached to a trigger in his pocket. Back in the studio, the images were laid into grids called Photo Notes. Their simplicity of form and presentation belies their complex anthropological, social and artistic commentary"--Publisher’s description.

Abstract

Jacques Henri Lartigue (1894–1986) was the best-known “amateur” in the history of photography, famously discovered by the art world and given an exhibition at MoMA in New York when he was in his late sixties. He began by recording the pastimes and customs of his wealthy Parisian milieu, indulging his fascination with sports and aviation, and throughout his long life he was never without his camera. His friendships extended to the superstars of French culture, but he also made thousands of photographs of his family, wives, and lovers. His work was irresistibly warm and engaging.

Shot over three years in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bali, Abbas’s images examine the enigmatic beliefs of sub-sects such as Sikhs and Jains, alongside the everyday life of Hindus, and extend beyond his characteristic black-and-white work to include a series of colour photographs - in his words: ’In India, colour was a temptation I couldn’t resist.’ The result is this sumptuous volume, a must-have for collectors and armchair travellers around the globe."--Subject
