TWO LEVEL SYSTEMS AND THE UNIVERSALITY OF THE LOW TEMPERATURE CHARACTERISTICS OF DISORDERED SOLIDS

<p style="MARGIN-TOP: 0px; MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0px" align="justify">Amorphous systems and many disordered lattices show peculiar and remarkably universal properties at low temperatures. These universal properties distinguish these materials from ordinary lattices, and at the same time testify for the existence of a unique mechanism at the basis of the disordered phase that dictates the low energy physics of these materials. A phenomenological model by Anderson Halperin and Varma, and Phillips, suggested that tunneling two level systems are the source of the above universality. Despite the relative success of this model, the full understanding of the low temperature universality is considered one of the important open questions in condensed matter physics. The apparent connection between two level systems and phenomena such as <i>1/f </i>noise and decoherence of superconducting qubits emphasizes the need to develop a theory that would explain the nature of the tunneling entities, and account for the universality of the phenomena, as well as for the energy scale dictating the temperature below which it is seen.
