<font face="Verdana"> </font> <p style="MARGIN-TOP: 0px; MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0px" align="justify">Strongly correlated electron systems often reflects the emergence of collective degrees of freedom, which are not simply related to the elementary constituents, and are not always easy to identify. A full-fledged theoretical description is therefore typically impossible. However, in many cases (particularly in one-dimensional systems) the essential properties of the system can be captured by a relatively simple effective model for the low-energy sector. The low-energy model provides a successful description of thermodynamic properties in the limit of low temperatures; yet it is not guaranteed to capture the transport properties, as the latter are often dominated by processes involving high energy excitations. This limitation of low energy models is particularly emphasized in cases where the system possesses approximate conservation laws, which render its conductance properties almost "perfect" in the low energy limit. I will discuss a theoretical approach to transport which relies on this concept.
