<font face="Verdana"> </font> <p style="MARGIN-TOP: 0px; MARGIN-BOTTOM: 0px" align="justify"><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><font size="2">Laser material processing has been developed almost simultaneously with the invention of the laser. Laser ablation is an efficient method for the noncontact removal of material from the surfaces of practically all types of matter – soft and hard. Thus, laser are used on large scale for metal processing (i.e. in the automotive industry), soft matter as well as for gem quality diamonds. However, like any other laser process, the spatial resolution is limited by optical diffraction to scale lengths of the order of the optical wavelength. The extension of these capabilities to the submicron and nanoscales requires a new approach. In our work, we are using an atomic force microscope, operating in the apertureless near field mode, and by means of ultrashort laser pulses, are able to modify surfaces with ~10 nm spatial resolution.
