A MAGNETIC ANALOG OF THE ISOTOPE EFFECT IN HTSC

Since the discovery of high temperature superconductivity in the cuprates, it has been speculated that their pairing mechanism is due to magnetic interactions. However, this was never proven. Such a proof would require an experiment similar to the isotope effect in metallic superconductors, namely, a measurement of Tc versus the in-plane super-exchange J, with no other structural changes. We have done such an experiment and found that Tc = c J_f n_s, where c~1, f is a super- conducting family index, and n_s is the superconducting carrier densi- ty. This is an experimental demonstration that pairing in the cuprates stems from magnetic interactions.
